Latah from Chinook Jargon?

edit

If I'm not mistaken the name of this country is the Chinook Jargon word for tooth or teeth (from Fr. le dent, les dents. Can anyone confirm this?Skookum1 21:30, 19 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

According to the Latah County Historical Society the meaning is from two Nez Perce words.
The name, "Latah," derives from the Nez Perce words for the pine tree, La-Kah, and the word for stone pestles used in grinding camas roots, Tah-ol.

Ain't no Latah Creek in this Latah County, Idaho. That's Hangman Creek, and it is in Benewah, Whitman, and Spokane County. You PCs want it named Latah COunty, circa 1994. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.35.0.122 (talk) 21:47, 21 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

New template for county

edit

Added new template box and removed superceded box. We still need a map of the county. --Robbie Giles 15:58, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Pronunciation question

edit

During the Moscow/U of I murder saga, at least one police higher up has been pronouncing Latah County like it rhymes with "Utah", not "beta", as provided in the IPA given. Does this need to be corrected or do folks pronounce it both ways? Any locals working on this article? YellowAries2010 (talk) 06:30, 9 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
