Fire lanterns

Should Khoom Fay fire lanterns be discussed in this article, or do they deserve their own article? They are not exactly your everyday lanterns, and definitely do not serve nearly the same purpose. Perhaps they should be in the balloon article?

There is so much that could be said about Kerosene lanterns (Like the railroad one)

History of lanterns

The history section is just dire. It doesn't mention dates and only really covers china and india, mentioning fireflies in 'transparent or semi-transparent containers' This section could do with the following.

• What is the earliest archaeological evidence of lanterns? (I know scallop shells have been used as lamps since the Palaeolithic, but I'm not sure they count as lanterns)
• What is the earliest literary reference to a lantern
• When did glass become a popular window (as opposed to perforated metal or thin horn)
• If fireflies really were used in an early form of lantern, what the was the 'transparent or semi-transparent container' made of?

Carbide lanterns

   I'm the same person who added (while I was an ip user some minutes ago) a link (to carbide lantern) to the caption of an image that obliquely mentions refers to a wonderful means of converting a solid fuel intoflammable gas by (I kid you not!), "every little once in a while" adding some water into the fuel tank. Perhaps more detailed prose in lantern, mining, and chemistry articles, discussing, at least in passing, both the chemical reaction and a range of time scales re what cavers may still, and miners used to, employ in their respective pursuits.
