Argumentation, opinion, propaganda in the article proper deleted edit

I deleted the following passage: It had been placed without attribution or reference at the very opening of the article. It is argumentation, an expression of an opinion without support, and propaganda for an external group and its work. It does not belong in the article proper; it belongs here on the discussion page.

The Deleted Material:
"This summary is incomplete, and unduly focuses on recent controversies. The Archives, Media and Publications Subcommittee of the Committee for Kirkland College will be revamping this entry, as it writes a more definitive history of Kirkland College. This is being prepared as part of the updated history of Hamilton College (spearheaded by Prof. Maurice Isserman) in anticipation of the bicentennial of Hamilton College in 2012. For more information, please visit the Kirkland College homepage on the Hamilton College website."

In defense edit

I would submit that this entry on Kirkland College is indeed unduly focused on the negative. Perhaps that particular portion of my addition deserved deletion; however it is a fact that the Archives, Media and Publications Subcommittee of the Committee for Kirkland College is collaborating with Prof. Maurice Isserman at Hamilton College, to write a comprehensive history of Kirkland College. This will be included in his updated history of Hamilton College, which is being written for Hamilton's bicentennial in 2012. The Committee for Kirkland College has a webpage on the Hamilton College website, and has been recognized by the Hamilton College Alumni Council. We are well known and supported by the Hamilton College administration. We are also known to the group, Hamilton College Alumni for Governance Reform. In general, comments, such as the one that was deleted, belong here, on the talk page of the article, not in the article itself. That sort of discussion is what these talk pages are for. LadyofShalott Weave 19:17, 15 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
To make things clear, here is a breakdown of why the material in that section was unsuitable for a Wikipedia article:
The phrase "This summary is incomplete" is a statement of opinion. It is perfectly suitable for the discussion page; it is in no way suitable for the main article page. Even if it could be referenced as a definitive opinion by major figures in the field (what field?), with reference citations to publish or otherwise publicly in generally distributed material supporting the opinion - it would still be an opinion - and as such, would have to be delineated as such in the text. (Example: "it is believed by a number of reliable sources such as [CITED SOURCE] that ... etc."). And even then it would not be suitable for the article on Kirkland College proper, because it would not be about Kirkland College - about the Wikipedia article on Kirkland College.
The phrase "unduly focuses on recent controversies." is, again, simply an expression of an opinion, unsupported by reference or citation. Again, it belongs on the discussion page - not in the article proper.
re: "The Archives, Media and Publications Subcommittee of the Committee for Kirkland College will be revamping this entry", this is a statement about something that may be done in the future by an organization separate from Kirkland College. It's nice that someone may (or may not) be doing this and may (or may not) get it done; however, it is not about the college per se. Possible future matters/action/activities/achievement/accomplishments/whatevers pertaining to Kirkland College will be suitable for inclusion in the article (possibly) when they take place - not before.
re: The phrase"as it writes a more definitive history of Kirkland College" fails in two respects. First, it is again a statement about a future possibility, not an existent fact; second, it rests on an unsupported expression of an opinion.
For these reasons, intuitively obvious to the casual observer, I moved the material to where it belongs - on the discussion page.
BTW, are you in some way affiliated with Kirkland?

Yes I am edit

Yes, I am Chair of the Committee for Kirkland College, K'78 in fact. See our webpage at http://my.hamilton.edu/alumni/kirklandcollege/ . You will note that there are multiple links. The Kirkland Spirit is very much alive at Hamilton today. Zulurox (talk) 22:17, 23 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Legacy of Kirkland edit

I suggest that a section be created to describe the campus and buildings of Kirkland College, which are still very much in use. The architect, Ken Thompson, had been the Dean of the Graduate School of Architecture at Harvard.
