I went ahead and archived the talk page. I'm surprised that it had never been archived before, with comments dating back to November 2005 still on it! Plus, it was 54kb long, which is rather large. Disaster Kirby 20:12, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Can anyone suggest what colour "racid" is? It states that it is "a color unrecognisable to the human eye", but I can find no definition of this word anywhere!? Yet I did find a link to a site which also cites the same reference as this comment does, and it states that Kirby's original colour was yellow. I cannot read Japanese and thus cannot make an interpretation of this reference myself. Can anyone confirm any of this further? I'm not comfortable with the colour being described as racid. (Lingari (talk) 06:28, 14 March 2009 (UTC))
- It's vandalism that slipped in under the radar. Racid is not a color, just someone's idea of a joke, I guess. Good thing you brought it up so it could be fixed.~ Dusk Knight 06:04, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Video Games and the Anime...
Are they completely separate continuities, or is the anime a prequel to the video game series? 208.101.155.204 21:24, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- They're separate entities. I think this was stated by Sakurai in an interview, but don't quote me on it. Disaster KirbyTalk 21:37, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- If I'm right, the only 2 games the anime is similar to are Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland and Kirby Air Ride. Hikar
Species Section
The Species section is pretty shabby, and it's mostly speculation anyway. Since Kirby's "species" has never really been addressed within any game, I think this section can be removed. --Shroom Mage 18:59, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
- I think the first paragraph and the part about Batamon should be kept. They refer to in game occurrences which could cause confusion so it's relevant to mention. The two middle paragraphs are probably unnecessary though.~ Dusk Knight 02:40, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Height
How tall is Kirby? My friend has been rather insistent that in Smash Bros 64 there's a character bio that explicitly states that Kirby is around 9 inches tall, but I don't recall this at all. It may be that I just never looked at the feature or anything, but if someone could verify this it'd be cool. --Bluedeanie (talk) 21:36, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
- The article says 8 inches tall. I can confirm his in-game bio from the first Smash Bros. game says 8 inches. Also here's a link translating the other source listed for his height:[1]. It gives his "size" as 20cm.~ Dusk Knight 02:26, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

- I must argue with you on that. his copy abiliy is an ability. Most articals show abilitys like the spider-man page, and the mario page(i think) so kirbys copy forms should be listed. -artha14 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.185.12.107 (talk) 21:50, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

- Kirby's copy ability is a single ability with many possibilities, as is currently described. Listing each and every possibility for this one ability won't significantly increase the readers' understanding of the character and would take up a ridiculous amount of space.~ Dusk Knight 22:32, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

- I'm not familiar with this particular anime, so I can't really comment on that. As far as I know Meta Knight, could theoretically be considered a knight, but he and Kirby are separate characters. Useight (talk) 20:29, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Is a Reception section appropriate for a character?
The Reception section contains a criticism about Kirby, but it's really aimed at one of the games. I don't see "critical reception" as being appropriate for Kirby. Kubito (talk) 09:32, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Result: Unanimous consensus to delist as GA Kung Fu Man (talk) 23:09, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
I'm not entirely sure how this article even got to GA in the condition it's in: while there's potential for a good article here, there's more than a few citation-needed tags and many small, choppy paragraphs. A lack of reception section is a bit troubling too, given this is one of the more iconic characters. To top it off at a glance a few sections feel like original research is present.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 05:14, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
- I agree. I don't know why it wouldn't have a reception section, either. Even if no articles on the actual character are available, reviews on the franchise or games almost always contain the reviewer's view on the character. As it is, I think the article needs drastic work and should be demoted until improvement can be made. After that, it could be put through another GAR. The article is probably at about C-Class currently, maybe B-Class. While it certainly is long, most of it is unreferenced in-universe information. WhiteArcticWolf (talk) 01:15, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
- Delist for the following reasons:
- Non-free images need better rationales. Would not meet 6(a).
- Significant lack of reliable sourcing. Nearly all the sources are unreliable, with over half the content in the article being completely unsourced. What is particularly damning is the presence of cleanup tags and {{fact}} tags—a GA no-no. Would not meet any part of criterion 2.
- Significant MoS/prose issues. A quick skim of the article shows a lot a weasel words and peacockery, not to mention quite a bit of words to avoid. Other MoS issues include inconsistencies with italics and overlinking. Would not meet either part of criterion 1.
- Significant recent instability. Would not meet criterion 5.

Regarding Epic Yarn and the wording in the article
I just changed part of the article that discusses the announced "Kirby Wii" game, which apparently was scrapped and turned into Kirby's Epic Yarn. However, I don't like the wording, and I don't know what to replace it with; perhaps it's best to completely remove it? I changed it into this:
- In a game announced for the Wii, Kirby was again given the ability to release his absorbed enemy as an ally. However, that game turned into Kirby's Epic Yarn.
~FireyFly tc 14:44, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
- How about this? ;) Blake (Talk·Edits) 14:59, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
- In Kirby's Epic Yarn, Kirby was again given the ability to release his absorbed enemy as an ally.
- Definitely sounds better, but the problem is that the sentence applies to an old trailer that no longer seems to be related to the game. Compare this to this. Actually, now when I look at it again, it looks like Kirby is releasing an enemy as an ally at 0:55, so never mind then :). ~FireyFly tc 06:20, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Review
To begin with, let's define what it is that you're aiming for. WikiProject Video games has a fair amount of GAs on characters, as shown by this list. One of our more recent promotions was Glass Joe. Lara Croft is probably the highest quality GA-class character article, since its main contributor, User:Guyinblack25, has consistently tried to get it to featured status. Because of that, it looks more like a FA than a GA. Anyway, I think you should start by taking a look at both Glass Joe and Lara Croft. Kirby will probably be closer to Glass Joe in structure and length, but, if you examine Lara Croft, you'll get a sense of how far the idea of a character article can be pushed.
Now, on to this article. It's rough. Very rough. For starters, the article has only 27 references, which is not nearly enough for a character this famous. Worse still, many of these references don't appear to qualify as reliable sources. Here are the ones that seem worth removing: VG Cats, Nintendo-Power.de, Nippon Export, A-suma, this thing and this (last one might be usable; I'm not sure). The "Kirby's Rainbow Resort" links appear to be fansites, which are generally to be avoided. Relying on them would probably be detrimental in the long run, particularly if you're forced to remove them during a GA review.
After you've done this, you need to analyze which sections of the article most need attention. Personally, I would start with the "Concept and creation" and "Reception" sections. Unlike the other sections, which suffer from bloat, these are underdeveloped. Hacking away at content is often easier than generating it from nothing, so we'll start with the hard part. But, before any writing takes place, you need to find reliable research material. Start by reading some of the material that the article already uses for references. Other Kirby articles may also have usable stuff. Digging around, I found this and this, which seem decent enough. You might also try searching through our reference library for Kirby-related material. The older Nintendo Power issues, in particular, had several features and reviews of the early Kirby games. If you still don't have enough material for a section, try asking for help at the WikiProject Fictional characters talk page. Those guys may be able to provide you with reference material.
Once you've researched, then it's time to expand and tighten the section, citing your sources as you go. Use Glass Joe's creation section as a model when necessary. Anyway, if you need assistance here and there with the actual writing or reference-finding, let me know. I'm happy to help, even though my experience with character articles is limited at best. You might also ask WPVG member User:New Age Retro Hippie, who wrote Glass Joe, if he'd be interested in helping or giving pointers. Character articles are one of his specialities.
That took awhile to type. If you have any questions, ask them here. I'll answer them when I get the chance. Once you've started in on the article, I'll continue my review. The key thing right now is finding and exploiting reliable sources, which will deal one of the biggest reasons the article was delisted. Don't worry about prose quality yet; that comes at the end. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 05:17, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the input, and it really helps. I see that its been a couple of months since you last spoke on this subject and I wanted to touch base on what should NOW be tweaked. I still see that the "Main Series" and "Reception" sections could use some work on them, along with still trying to get more sources that are decent. Just figured I would ask of your new opinion. I am compiling sources as we speak and look forward to your input. Sephiroth878 (talk) 19:01, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
Kirby 64
I have heard that in order for Kirby to be round looking in Kirby 64, they had to cut the polygon count from the background environment. This would be fantastic development information if anybody can find a source. Blake (Talk·Edits) 22:29, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
Images and Improvements
I'm trying to improve this article, as it's quite troublesome for such a famous character. I'm focusing on the text, but one thing it could use is more images if possible. I think it at least needs an image of Kirby with a copy ability, such as Sword or Fire or Ice as they're most iconic. In addition, an image of an earlier version from Dream Land or Adventure would look nice in the Concept section. If we're feeling greedy, his Smash Wii U art can go in that section and an anime picture can be included. I don't know of the issues with that, though.
I rewrote the lead, but likely will do it again to make it larger, and removed a lot of OR. There's lots of manuals and interviews to go through now for sources. Just try to keep the article narrow and not feel like every detail is necessary. Scarlettail (talk) 03:21, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

Under 'Concept and creation', the only source that cites the origins of Kirby's name is this 2012 article from the Official Nintendo Magazine, which only indicates that a statement was made by Miyamoto prior (without linking his original statement).
I believe that the original source is from an interview with Miyamoto published by Game Informer in 2011. This is because I recognize Miyamoto's statement from when it was printed in a UK Nintendo Magazine called 'Nintendo Gamer'. (I talked about this in a Reddit post I made recently - which prompted me to post the sources here as well.)
Alongside updating the source in this article, I also think it can be cited in the John Kirby (attorney) and Universal City Studios, Inc. v. Nintendo Co., Ltd. articles.
Here is the source in pre-formatted text:

Unrelated to this, there is also a source that predates this one from a 2005 N-Sider article titled "HAL Laboratory: Company Profile" that states that "[Masahiro] Sakurai doesn't recall how Kirby ended up being named Kirby". I thought I might as well mention this one as well since I've seen it cited on various other websites before.
Here is the second source in pre-formatted text if needed:

Kirby's official height
The official height, given by Nintendo of Japan, is defined as exactly 20 cm, as proven by the first source. Therefore the primary unit given on Wikipedia should be in cm, since that is the factually accurate and correct value. Giving it in imperial first and a precise metric value in decimals is wrong. It also gives the false impression that the official height is exactly 8 inches, which is also wrong. I would say it's objectively wrong to state the height in inches first since that is not what the definition is.
Sure, the English translation of Smash Bros and related material as made by Nintendo of America has taken 20 cm and rounded it to an even 8 inches; but this is a converted value and does not represent the official original value as given bu Nintendo of Japan. So it can be fine to write "20 cm (8 inches)" since this would reflect the official original value, and then what the official converted value is.
Some have argued that this doesn't matter much. But it does. Keep the primary values as the official measured value. This is how it's done for Production car speed record for example, since records are measured and recorded in metric. The same should be true for all Japanese content that are measured and decided for in metric. Is there any official Wikipedia decision on how units should be treated? It would simply make sense that the primary unit is the one that it was measured in.

- More recent material, such as Kirby and the Forgotten Land, shows Kirby next to one of those height measuring things they have at theme parks which says he is much taller than 20cm. I think this article should be updated to match. PinkPuffyPower759 (talk) 18:05, 17 February 2023 (UTC)

Void's Relation to Kirby
In the Species section, it heavily references Void's apparent association with Kirby as well as its relation to Zero and Dark Matter, most of which is highly speculatory information that isn't confirmed as fact. Whilst Void being Kirby is a popular fan theory that has some credence, it is never stated outright that Void created Zero and Dark Matter (Despite heavy referencing). Alongside the fact this theory is not confirmed canon, it seems to highly speculatory to outright include in the Wikipedia article for him, and thus I am suggesting this information should be removed. Main image
I think Kirby's main picture on this article should be updated to either his Kirby and the Forgotten Land artwork or his Kirby's Return to DreamLand Deluxe artwork. There are a few reasons I think this change should be made.
- It is artwork from the Kirby series instead of the Super Smash Bros. series, and Kirby is from the Kirby series.
- That artwork is newer.
- The artwork has a more recent and slightly different design for Kirby.
Please consider this and replace the Super Smash Bros. main image with the main image of him from Kirby and the Forgotten Land or Kirby's Return to DreamLand Deluxe. PinkPuffyPower759 (talk) 18:11, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
- The current artwork is fine.
- Being from the Smash series doesn't make it an inaccurate depiction of the character. Kirby looks exactly the same in both series.
- We don't update non-free character art just because it's newer. We update if the image depicts the character in a way more suited to a Wikipedia article.
- Kirby's design is so simple that it has barely changed in the past 30 years and any new changes are imperceptible to the average reader.

Does the 20cm thing really apply anymore?
The whole 20cm thing comes from the Super Smash Bros. Melee, right? Melee is kind of infamous for it's inaccurate entries on characters. I guess that would count as original research to question a primary source on In-universe information, but is this even considered canon since this information doesn't actually appear in the Kirby games?
