Mattin's Peer Review

Overall, I enjoyed reading your article! The writing is all good quality and the tone sounds pretty neutral. I also liked the emphasis on the economic situation and its effects on the policies/treatment of Japanese South Africans.

- The article does a very good job of explaining the history of Japanese South Africans and how different government policies applied to them/racialized them. - On the topic of economics, it's great to include and definitely a seminal part of the history of Japanese South Africans, but I think it would be nice to talk about their lived experiences and other aspects of their lives as well (if there are any sources on that?) - So far the structure is coherent and makes sense.

Here are just a couple of suggestions:

- Perhaps consider adding a brief intro about who Daniel François Malan was — that might make his influence a little more clear. - I would consider rephrasing "In 1989, Japan introduced GGP (Grant assistance for Grassroots human security Projects)" to maybe putting the full name first, and then saying it was also called GGP.

Overall, I enjoyed reading your article & look forward to the full version!

Temie's Peer Review

I think this is good enough for a first draft. I like how time specific are most of the points you mentioned and also how you classified it in three timewise in relation to apartheid. I am sure whatever I comment on will be something that you are already planning to work on but here are my comments.

  • I think an introduction part to explain what your page is about would be great for people who have no idea about the subject matter instead of diving straight to it.
  • although it sounds good how your draft focused on the economic aspect, I was wondering if the story has other aspects you could mention like for example political aspect, racial aspect and so on.

Overall, superb job. Temie (talk) 00:08, 10 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Apologies!

edit

I did a drive-by merge of this article with Japanese people in South Africa (which covered the same or similar scope). Had I understood that this was part of a course assignment, I would not have done that. In my defence, it was ten-times better than "Japanese people in South Africa" in terms of content, prose, and citations. The original version of the article can still be located at this link.

The article is substantially the same, but the following things changed because of the merge:

  • The lead sentence went from The precise number of Japanese living in South Africa is unknown. to There is a small community of Japanese expatriate people living in or people who were born in South Africa with Japanese ancestry. Most of them live in Johannesburg and other major cities.
  • This sentence was added: Japanese immigration to South Africa began when Japan emerged as the country's largest trading partner when it was under apartheid.
  • A section on Education is now included. There is also now a See also section.
  • The notable individuals section includes a hatnote
  • A few things are now linked.
  • There are now navboxes and categories to help with reader navigation.

Again, I am sorry if that was disruptive to the course at all. I will avoid such mistakes in the future, and I am very glad to see excellent work such as this coming out of this course. –MJLTalk 01:14, 29 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
