1919-76

In trying to expand this section, I'm not having any luck finding website info from each old State LEAGUE - all I can find is Carnival results for States on their respective WP pages. There is no Wikipedia article on Carnivals bar a few notable ones long ago. I can't find a record of single Interstate games eg VFL v WAFL, SANFL v VFL etc anywhere - not even on their websites!

It appears that since the formation of the AFL (and State of Origin matches further complicate the issue), this info/data has all been left behind in analogue records and hasn't been digitised yet. For instance, soon after the formation of the National competition, in Victoria the VFA became the VFL, and in trying to get info on the old VFL it just leads to the current AFL again (and conversely the VFA to VFL).

I pretty much echo that sentiment. I've never seen a full listing of stand-alone interstate games from the pre-origin era on the internet. You could probably get a complete listing of all such games played in WA from 1945 onwards because a Simpson Medal was awarded in each; and, hardballget.com has a listing of all VFA rep games. But to get every game from 1919 to 1979 probably requires manual research via newspapers, or old copies of the Record or Budget. Aspirex (talk) 11:31, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

Dubious claim

I call into question the unreferenced assertion that an IP editor has been restoring that interstate football was "hugely popular" in Victoria. The 1989 crowd of 91,000 is really the only data point to support that; weak crowds at the 1958 Melbourne Carnival and in most other interstate games played in Victoria listed on this page (for which the crowds are given) all serve as strong evidence to the contrary. I don't have specific references as yet (I will endeavour to gather them at my next opportunity) but I've seen many news articles following interstate games from the 1960s until the 1990s describing the ANFC/NFL's disappointment with the low crowds drawn to interstate games in Victoria. Australian National Football Council

References to the Australian National Footbal Council (ANFC) keep getting removed. Its pretty important to note who organised these matches since there is otherwise no mention in the article other than "Australian National Football Carnival" (named for the Council). I think it is also important to note that AFL dissolved this organisation along with the teams and tournaments and why since that is the primary reason these matches are no longer contested.--Rulesfan (talk) 01:28, 1 May 2022 (UTC)

The diff I have been removing is this one, and I dispute its accuracy. I removed it on the grounds of WP:VERIFIABILITY, with Rulesfan having provided no reference. Additionally, there are references provided on The Allies page which wholly contradict the disputed diff, which state that the AFL Commission took steps in the mid-1990s to reinvigorate interstate football, not to phase it out. (The fact that those steps ultimately failed to work does not mean that there was a phase-out plan).

I removed references to the ANFC in error and have returned them to the page. Aspirex (talk) 09:41, 1 May 2022 (UTC)

Player payment

I'm curious to know how much players were paid to participate. Assuming they were because there was a separate Amateurs team competing. I haven't been able to find any reference to it, but that they must have offered the superstar players some incentive given the requirement for release contracts from their various leagues. --Rulesfan (talk) 08:53, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

1983-1987

Article says "Between 1983 and 1987 there was a new format introduced, with only Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia competing, where each team would play each other once during the year, rather than in a standalone carnival"
