The 2004 change edit

I'm not sure if I did a very good job at it, but I tried to explain the way the highways were set up before the changes in 2004. I live in Saco and drive I-295 frequently when I have to go to/from Orono (mainly because it's shorter than going up to Lewiston on I-95, and it has no tolls from Exit 1 onward).

Basically, if you drove on I-295 and got to Exit 14 (at least I think that's the number... it's been about 2 years since the change... it is the exit for the connector currently numbered as I-495), the highway suddenly became I-95. It was the same highway, but it was just renumbered after that exit. Same for what was I-95/495 prior to the change; the road was the same, but the number changed.

Apparently 95 went up to Exit 9, followed the connector, and then absorbed 295; the road which had been 95 up to Exit 9 magically became 495. It never made any sense to me, so I am actually pretty happy with the change (not that that's particularly relevant, I just thought I'd share).

So I guess my point is that that's what I was trying to say in a manner befitting an encyclopedia entry. I don't think I did very well, so I thought I'd explain myself and what I was trying to get across. If it's no longer necessary to keep it (it has been changed, after all), then that's fine, chop it.

As far as I can tell, the exit numbers from the origin in Scarborough and through Portland haven't changed with the renumbering, so I stated such in the article- I'm not sure exactly where the exits begin with the mileage, but my gut feeling is that it starts after the 495 connector. --DarthBinky 07:31, 2 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
