Form of Name
editThe cited information text [1] reads: 'The aim of the "Gemeinsame Normdatei (GND)" project is to combine the existing [...] authority files [...] into a single universal authority file (GND). ...'. This seems to imply that "Gemeinsame Normdatei" should be the preferred denomination in any language. A possible translation of "Gemeinsame Normdatei" would be "Combined Authority File". "single universal" makes sense only in the context of the very sentence above (and IMO should be read as "unified"). -- Gymel (talk) 21:21, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
- Your right "Single universal authority file (GND)" is more a description than a translation but it is used in all official documents. "Universal" probably means that the GND contains authority files world wide, while the German National Library only collects German-language publications from 1913 on. --Kolja21 (talk) 23:02, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
- Found it:

GND calls this 'Integrated Authority File'
editThe GND refers to this subject as 'Integrated Authority File', not 'Universal Authority File' -- see the GND Ontology namespace document and the public GND Ontology announcement to the W3C mailing list. Are there any objections to changing the article's title? Emw (talk) 21:59, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
- Both translations are correct, but the DNB has now decided to chose the translation used by Alexander Haffner as the "official translation".[3] Therefore indeed we have to move the article. Thanks for the info! --Kolja21 (talk) 06:34, 6 March 2013 (UTC)
- In fact, Integrated Authority File is the officially sanctioned translation, however, the actual name of this file is Gemeinsame Normdatei (GND). Both terms are used in similar numbers in the web, probably also because this article uses the translation rather than the actual name (it wouldn't have been the first time that our titles make it into the web). I find it rather odd that this article is written in a way suggesting that "Integrated Authority File" would be the actual name. For historical correctness and to maintain our own integrity as an encyclopedia, we should use the actual name and make it clear that Integrated Authority File is the translation. --Matthiaspaul (talk) 15:58, 5 August 2021 (UTC)
