Talk:Honorary city titles in Nazi Germany

What is Berlin and Hamburg mixed in here ? edit

See, e.g., census book 1939 "Gemeindeverzeichnis für das Deutsche Reich aufgrund der Volkszählung vom 17. Mai 1939" (Berlin 1941), p. 22.

  • Berlin, Reichshauptstadt
  • Hamburg, Hansestadt

Berlin was Reichshauptstadt before, Hamburg Hansestadt before and after, so it's complete thematic failure to mix both in here. Cologne, for example, also was Hansestadt and is not mentioned here, what is right. Hamburg never bore (officially) the title "Tor zur Welt", it's trivia and has nothing to do with the theme, so has not Hitler's erratic quota of "declining cultural value" or so of german cities. --Oenie (talk) 07:47, 2 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

It traces the origin of the ehrentitel tradition to the Imperial period. The custom was not just invented out of thin air. I don't see why we shouldn't mention this. A short summary stating that honorary titles were given in earlier times is sufficient. Mvaldemar (talk) 09:09, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
