Old stuff

This is based on the PWN encyclopedia (http://encyklopedia.pwn.pl/10121_1.html) and the version appearing in the Polish Wiki. Controversial topic though so more details, other perspectives, extensions are definetly welcome.radek 06:25, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

"Soon" ?

edit

However soon after it renewed the fight against Germans and on May 5 liberated -- offhand, five months is not "soon". The renewal of activity five days before hostilities were declared ceased in Soviet-controlled areas of Europe lends the impression the leadership of the brigade was concerned as to how they would be seen in posterity. --W. It says that they suspended operations against the Germans between January and May and "soon after" that, i.e. May 5th. The wording's a bit awkward it's true. As to their motivations I think they might've been more concerned about how the Western Allies would see them. All in all, from what I've read (and it's been awhile) it was probably more like in early '45 there were still Germans around but the Soviets were coming fast so they wanted to get the hell out of there so they hauled it, avoiding any German formations along the way (which were also happy to avoid them). Once they were far enough away from getting engulfed by the Soviets and close enough to the Western Allies they went after the first German forces they saw and liberated the camp. The motivation was most likely a mix of wanting to fight the Germans and trying to save their own skin from the Soviets.radek (talk) 07:38, 15 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
radek, thank you for the prompt response. I wondered if the lack of activity for four months points to some kind of story that's not really brought out in the article. I also considered that during the particularly harsh winter of 1944-45 that perhaps simple survival consumed much of the brigade's time and energy. Would you mind if I took a stab at re-wording the "soon" sentence so that it is a bit more clear ? --W. B. Wilson (talk) 19:29, 15 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Go right ahead. As far as the story - I might be mixing things up here but I recall that there was something involving a suspicious character (who was also their connection with the Germans) who in the end they ended believing to be either a Soviet or German agent and executing. Some of this stuff used to be on the web though I'm not sure it was from RS. It's really been awhile since I read about this.radek (talk) 05:09, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Looking around the net quickly, there's something mentioned about the above on a Polish historical forum [1] (in Polish - post #8 by magister) - there was an individual supposedly named Herbert Jura, ps. "Tom" that in all likelihood was a Gestapo or SD agent (and was eventually executed by the Brigade). I used to know of some more reliable sources on this topic but that was awhile ago.radek (talk) 05:17, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
