Ancient vs Historic edit

This article seems to be a hybrid between Ancient roads (of Europe/Asia Middle East) and Historic (19th+early 20th) roads of N America. As defined in Ancient history:

Ancient history is the study of the written past from the beginning of human history until the Early Middle Ages

Thus I suggest that the Historic roads of N America don't fit into this category.--ReddyRose 12:23, 16 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree - this article is becoming muddled. It seems obvious to me(!) that an article headed 'Ancient roads' should refer to just that topic, and those routes that are post-Middle Ages should not be included here. -- Carbonix (talk) 16:47, 4 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Moved this article to historic roads until such time that a split can be made (or at least add content and 'main' article sections). The article is woefully short. But I will be adding references, materials, and content in the next few days. J. D. Redding 05:35, 18 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Should be included edit

Heading or topics that should be covered ...

Trade Routes,

route from Babylon to India,
from Babylon to Asia Minor,
Euphrates a highway,
routes in India,
early routes
between Europe and the East,
commercial routes of Asia,

Ancient trackway edit

There is a parallel article called Ancient trackway. The lead reads: "Ancient trackway refers to an ancient track, or trail, Such paths existed from the earliest prehistoric times and in every inhabited part of the world. Many ancient trails can still be seen and walked". Should the two articles be merged? Rwood128 (talk) 15:34, 15 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

As there has been objections I'll merge the articles shortly. Rwood128 (talk) 17:34, 20 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

It has been suggested that there is significant difference between an ancient trackway and an historic road. [1]. Any comments? Rwood128 (talk) 18:13, 21 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Changing the title to "Historic roads and trails"? edit

In the USA and Canada there are "historic trails" rather than "historic roads". This is reflected in the lead. I, therefore, suggest that the title be changed to "Historic roads and trails. Rwood128 (talk) 22:31, 29 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

lede proposal edit

The current opening sentence is confusing. How about this change (and keeping the current citations intact)?

Historic roads or Ancient trackways are paths leading from one place to another that "have great historical importance or fame". Examples exist from prehistoric times until the early twentieth century. This includes trackways, tracks, or roads that existed in "the period of history before the fall of the Western Roman Empire" in 476 A.D. "The first roads were paths made by animals and later adapted by humans." In North America they are often called trails. Netherzone (talk) 19:57, 4 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Netherzone I have tried to make the lede clearer. What do you think? I'm still pondering why you think "paths leading from one place to another" is needed? Rwood128 (talk) 20:38, 4 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi Rwood128 thanks for your note. I think placing the info in the parenthesis was a good decision. The reason why I was suggesting "paths leading from one place to another" is that the lede seems redundant. "Historic roads are (....) roads and tracks..." is like saying "Historic fresco paintings are frescos and paintings that are historical." Netherzone (talk) 00:35, 6 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Netherzone, Thanks. I saw the phrase as redundant because that's what a road is. What about <Historic roads (historic trails in USA and Canada) are paths or routes that "have great historical importance or fame">? Rwood128 (talk) 12:10, 6 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Rwood128 that is an improvement. Netherzone (talk) 13:09, 6 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
