The original meaning of the term "hiisi" in Finnish is a "sacred place", or a place inhabited by supernatural beings. The can be extended to describe these beings as well, and only during Christianisation was this re-interpreted as a generic term for all kinds of monstrous beings (such as goblins or trolls).
