Talk:Hazardous waste

Article suggestions.

edit

Although the article suggests many examples regarding waste, it is a bit hard to understand. As I was looking at the reference links, it was hard to navigate straight to the topic. I recommend clearing up some issue regarding waste with new updated sources with statistics or pictures maybe? The article seems to be more favorable to the United States so I think the article should only focus on "hazardous waste" itself rather than just one country. Although I am still getting used to wiki, I hope my feedbacks helped ! --17calbrs (talk) 02:08, 1 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Lead graphic confusing

edit

The photo in the lead depicting Grand Coulee Dam and Public Infrastructure as an example of hazardous waste is only confusing the reader. Opt for something that has direct relevance. ASRASR (talk) 11:39, 21 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Have removed this photo. Would like to add the UN map on Hazardous Waste generation https://unstats.un.org/unsd/environment/envpdf/HWaste.pdf - about 10 years old but there is nothing like this that is more up to date. To publish this map will most probably require copyright release. ASRASR (talk) 12:55, 21 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

existing article on chemical waste

edit

There is already an article titled "chemical waste". The hazardous waste article is more thorough and has encyclopedic tone.

@RoBunsen: Do you think that article should be merged into this one, with "chemical waste" simply being a WP:REDIRECT to here? Or is there enough specifically about chemical waste that essentially all content on that topic should be unified and moved there, leaving here just a summary and info about other types of hazards? Actually, I'm beginning to think that the "chemical waste" article should be renamed, "laboratory chemical waste". There a lot of good sections that deal with this topic. Let me continue working on it and will edit this reply with my thoughts soon. RoBunsen (talk) 21:57, 29 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Following comments are about Chemical waste page. This article is mostly about laboratory chemical waste. I have adjusted the article for conciseness and remove "how-to" -like voice. I suggest that all the environmental and case studies be removed, and the "regulation of chemical waste" be removed. Then I believe the article should be renamed "laboratory chemical waste".
Following comments are about Hazardous waste: I agree with the stated issues on this page. Much work is needed. RoBunsen (talk) 22:12, 29 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi Wikipedia, here are some plans I have for improving this article, sorted by section:

I. Disposal: I want to reorganize this section into better defined categories, maybe sorted by how commonly they are implemented if I can find that information. I think the title for “incineration, destruction, and waste-to-energy” could be changed to incineration, keeping the mention of energy production. I want to have a section about how waste is “stabilized” for storage. I will also try to ensure everything in this section is cited.

II. Regulatory history: I want to include regulatory information from beyond the US! I want to add information about international guidelines to this section. I might also try to find cases around the world of how hazardous waste is disposed.

III. Types: I want to expand this section beyond the US as well. I want to include information about sources of hazardous waste as well.

Please let me know your thoughts about these changes, if I’m about to do anything unwise, and especially if this information would be better on another page that I’m not aware of. Thanks!
