Etymology
editWhat is the etymology of this place name? Badagnani (talk) 00:21, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
It is where the Hatteras Indians lived. Also the entire island used to be heavily forested..much wider with a cape further to the north..the deforestation of Hatteras Island occurred early on and may have been the primary source of timber for the English fleet that defeated the Spanish Armada in the English channel..the overall environmental impact of people since European contact is probably the cause of the numerous environment problems on Hatteras Island today. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lonepilgrim007 (talk • contribs) 18:50, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
Roanoke Descendants
editThis section about the Roanoke Colony probably migrating to Hatteras is way off...there are many theories regarding what happened to them and this not in any way the accepted theory..the word Croatoan had many meanings..the name of the village where the Croatoan Indians lived...the name of the southern end of what is now Hatteras Island..and the name of the people who lived there..there is no sense in trying to give different meanings to the different spellings here as they are all obviously related. No one knows what happened to them..alot of the more credible explanations say they probably sent a lookout party to Hatteras but very few people ever really get into the fact that the Carolina Algonquians in general had already suffered from European diseases up to a possible 90% mortality rate before the the 1st colony got there..my guess is the Crotoans had already left by then for the mainland which is probably where the colonist went..there is also a theory that the English were already there cutting timber..I doubt by the time the 2nd colony got there the indians wanted anything to do with them and had already left. I have never heard anyone state this as fact other then the local business community who are using it to promote tourism. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.231.214.100 (talk) 20:25, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Settlement
editApart from the speculation (stated as fact) about the Roanoke colonists, there is nothing about later settlement. This omission ought to be corrected.Royalcourtier (talk) 18:43, 21 July 2016 (UTC)
