Controversies section

I am surprised to read this article and find it lacking any references to their plan and withdrawal of that plan to publish the O.J. Simpson book If I Did It. I would think it would be pertinent to the article. Jhawk1024 13:29, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Date question

Hi!The article says: "In 1989 (!!!), Collins was bought by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation. Joined together with the New York-based publisher Harper & Row in 1987 (!!!), they now trade under the name HarperCollins." Vandalism

One of the recent vandals inserted this link [1] in the page he disfigured. I traced the IP to New York. In the post on the message board from Chad, Administrator of the website "Talk Jesus", who posted a long diatribe against the New International Version of the Bible, is in New York according to the location listed for him. Better infobox

What about Collins?

Hi I was looking for an article about book publishers called Collins, though I can't find it. Is it connected to HarperCollins? Is so, I think Collins deserves its own article. Ross Rhodes (T C) ^Sign! 21:21, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Each significant imprint of this publishing giant deserves its own article, both to document their notable contributions before any mergers/acquisitions, and their continued identity as an imprint afterwards. Collins was a major british publisher. We dont even have a section on the origin of the HC symbol: it was the fountain of collins publishers, and the torch of harper, combined into water under fire. very elegant. This article should be about the combined publisher only, and list books issued since its creation. authors published by collins, ecco, harper, etc etc before any mergers belong in the separate articles. each imprint represents a cultural philosophy, a group of editors or a single editor with a vision for both commercial and literary success. these editors shepherded authors and books to greatness, before the modern period where authors have more power and editors are often rubber stampers. Thus the history of civilization crumbles under the weight of the cycle of quarterly corporate foolishness. we can do our part to fight this by simply documenting each imprint and division as carefully as possible.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 06:21, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

HARPER & COLLINS

the history section in this article has almost nothing about harper, including the merger; it's mostly a history of collins. that kind of needs fixing...Lx 121 (talk) 06:45, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

I linked back to an article on Harper & Brothers. If there was ever an article on Harper & Row I don't know how to get it back as "Harper & Row" now redirects back to HarperCollins. I would like to see an article on Row, Peterson & Company as well. Also added link to Harper's Magazine at bottom.

Notable?

In the article on one of the worlds most prestigious publishing houses, in the section on notable published works, the first item is sarah palins book. give me a fucking break. Of course, its notable the same way that the burning of the reichstag is notable, but i think we could find a slightly more notable work from a literary or intellectual point of view. sorry for the flame bait, but i have a strong opinion about our book and publisher articles being inadequate, with the publishers being a catch all for usually the most recent of titles. Publishers are the foundation stone of our encyclopedia, and their editors, for better or worse, have been the gateways for all the significant documentation of our world for the last 300 years. lets do them better than just "hey, they published twilight and the trek novels!"Mercurywoodrose (talk) 16:45, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

That definitely helps. this now reads like a proper article. Of course, we can do much more (in our copious spare time as retired billionaires:), but at least its not cringeworthy any more. Its hard to document what publishers actually do as well as i would like. histories on them are rare. i did find the autobiography of Bennett Cerf, which would make editing Random House fun.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 17:06, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

Information on the Avon T series please

Hi just wondering if anyone can shed some light on a book i now own. The book is titled " Blue And Gray " It's from the Avon T series T-512. 1961. anthology of writings on the civil war. Donald Honig, editor. When published, it was not part of the HC mega publisher, but owned by Hearst, who also published William Morrow books. IF this book is notable beyond the Honig bibliography, it should be mentioned in the Avon (publishers) article, not here. HarperCollins name prior to 1989

I notice that a large number of books are credited to harpercollins on WP, which were published before the merger. their current editions may be from harpercollins, but the first publication would have been under a different name, such as harper & row.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 18:48, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

Notable books

WP has a lot of articles on books which dont show their notability. I think most of them probably deserve articles, they just havent been sourced properly. however, i am using editorial judgement and NOT including some of those titles in the list here. the list here is probably best for books which have garnered awards and serious critical commentary, or are giant bestsellers.
