Does that really belong here?

"Hail Mary" shot edit

This information is worth providing, for the benefit of a reader who encounters the concept and consults Wikipedia for more information, but it's probably not important enough for a separate article. If I follow the suggestion to create a separate article (which will be one sentence), it will almost surely be put up for AfD. My prediction is that deletion would be more likely than not, with some people commenting that the content could simply be merged with this dab page. Let's just avoid going the long way 'round. Your preferred version has a redlink to the article you invited me to create. The guideline you cite states:

Links to non-existent articles ("redlinks") may be included only when an editor is confident that an encyclopedia article could be written on the subject. (from Wikipedia:Manual of Style (disambiguation pages)#Redlinks)

That's why I responded as I did above -- I don't think that an article could be written on the subject.
The guideline for such situations calls for an entry that doesn't have a redlink, but gives the reader "somewhere to navigate to for additional information". I admit that the way I set it up doesn't exactly follow the "flibbygibby" model of the guideline, but it's a different situation because the photography term is a derivative usage. As a practical matter, it seems that the best way to handle it is with the wikilink to the football article (the original usage), and an inline external link for information about the usage in photography. There is precedent for a dab page entry for a nonexistent, flibbygibby-noodle-type article. The Jim Robinson dab page mentions the Free Republic founder even though the article about him was deleted through VfD. That's where I think we'd end up with this one if we tried to create a separate article.
I agree with your addition of the reference to the Hail Mary pass article, but someone who comes to the dab page won't know that a football article has more information about a photography term. It's helpful to the reader if the explanation and link are here as well.
By the way, rereading the guideline per your suggestion makes me think that the song probably doesn't deserve an article and therefore shouldn't be redlinked. JamesMLane t c 07:35, 20 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
