Talk:Goodbye Mr A

What's the reference here? edit

Obvious parody of Cap? Are we sure it's not a reference to Ditko's Mr. A? The lyrics strike me as seeming to match common critiques of the Objectivism that Mr A espoused. But on the other hand the costume doesn't match and the vid is full of Marvel references like the Bugle. --86.153.76.128 17:46, 26 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree. But then I just saw that Jonathan Ross show about Ditko on BBC4 so I'm biased.--86.43.64.115 14:01, 1 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
It's quite obvious that the lyrics are an argument against Objectivism, and the article on The Hoosiers already says so. I have a reference, and I will mention this in the talk page for The Hoosiers. Hatenames 00:41, 25 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
In an interview at stv.tv [1] they state that "Mr. A" is a man who "has all the answers", "who has figured life out" and how that's something to be detested. Thus I'd suggest that the A stands for Answer, and that he has nothing to do with Ditko's character (or Objectivism); likewise, I suspect that the Captain America style costume was the video director's idea. The biggest reference in this song edit

Is how much it sounds like Mister Blue Sky Plkrtn 12:35, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have edited the "Song History" to reflect this (but remove the phrase "rip off"!) Davetibbs (talk) 13:04, 19 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • I hardly think it's worth more than a sentence ... it's not even backed up with a source Joe Dull (talk) 11:57, 1 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Stylistically, it clearly is a ripoff of that ELO song, but to add it to the article would be original research without a reliable source comparing the two.--h i s s p a c e r e s e a r c h 14:51, 31 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Trivia edit

Is it me, or is the Trivia bit just read like someone misheard the lyrics? The Hoosiers are the clearest of singers and the actually say 'Goodbye Mr Aids'... 81.104.244.253 04:05, 2 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

He doesn't say that, it's stupid and I have deleted it as it has no sources and is not relevant. Also it is a violation of WP:TRIVIA. Thundermaster367 14:02, 7 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

He clearly does say that - I have uploaded a 3 second sample to prove this. Check it out for yourself! Davetibbs (talk) 13:05, 19 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
You're right! I've just listened to it on YouTube and he quite clearly says "aids". Add it in. Thundermaster367 (talk) 13:37, 19 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Waingels teacher? edit

Any reference for this - I've heard it discussed quite frequently, including Irwin Sparkes claiming on the radio (Radio 2, I believe it was, don't recall the date/time) that it was not about the teacher that it has been claimed to be. I have actually asked the teacher himself, and although he taught Sparkes, he does not claim the song was about him.

So, really, I don't think it's either true or relevant. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.196.147.120 (talk) 15:50, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

While I do think a source is needed for the teacher story, I don't see how you could have asked him when the song was supposedly written in response to his death. 128.114.255.97 (talk) 07:52, 30 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
