how it's can be a catalan surname if all the members there in the list are of senegalese descent? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.250.148.29 (talk) 02:20, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
- Not all of them, but there is clearly a Senegalese surname : it is borrowed from Portuguese like Mendy, Preira, Da Sylva, etc. No trace of any Occitan equivalent. The site http://www.geopatronyme.com/cgi-bin/carte/nomcarte.cgi?nom=Gomis&x=0&y=0 records only 15 births of Gomis before 1916, that are probably Spanish immigrants. The dictionary of the French surnames does not indicate any Gomis as an Occitan surname. Moreover the structure of the name is not Occitan : -es / -ez / -is to mean "son of" does not exist in Occitan as far as I know it is typical of Iberica.Nortmannus (talk) 18:18, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
