I agree that these two articles (ghazal and ghazel) should be united, since they are about the same topic.
Origins?
editGhazal is usually used to refer to a Persian and Urdu poetic tradition (Urdu being closely related to Persian and Hindi). As I understand it, it is an Indo-Aryan tradition, not Semetic. And it is not neccessarily love poetry. The article begins by stating that "The ghazal (also spelled ghazel or ghazl) is lyric love poetry dating back to the 7th Century in Arabia." I really do not see any relation to 7th century Arabia. 7th century Arabia seems to coincide with the origins of Islam, but I dont understand what it has to do with ghazal (which is frequently about drinking alcohol). The "7th century Arabia" claim seems factually incorrect to me. --Zeno of Elea 09:01, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
- I am pretty sure that Ghazal is the better article and... as we know from Sufis talk of alcohol is not outside the pale of Islam. gren グレン 09:33, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
- Sufis incorporated talk of intoxication into [[Qawwali] in a METAPHORICAL sense, not in a literal sense. --Zeno of Elea 12:59, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
