Neutrality? edit

Okay, I know there's a ton of problems with this article, but I don't think anybody's actually raised the point that the article itself is... absolute garbage. Technically speaking, of course. Really, the language of this article is actually offensively stupid. Every single, last word is tainted with a really painful positive slant; see: "The atmosphere is friendly and the party goers police themselves. Racism, sexism and aggression are not tolerated. The freetekno party is a good example of a Temporary Autonomous Zone." "There is no central organizing body for freetekno sound systems or parties. It is not a specific group of people, but rather a way of living and partying that ties together diverse individuals. Sound systems start up between friends. Trust and respect are key elements of the scene." "Freeteknitians come from a wide variety of backgrounds. They have diverse political and religious beliefs and economic resources. Some generalities can be observed: Freeteknitians are often socialists." Seriously. I don't know what the hell the clown who wrote this was thinking, but I don't want this on my Wikipedia. I don't know anything about this subject ("Freetekno?"), a.k.a., I have a totally valid excuse to be lazy and not fix this myself. Just trying to raise the point here. Hope somebody who's a part of this shit and also isn't a complete moron can turn this into a presentable, Wikipedia-worthy article. Thanks! --Foodlegs (talk) 22:43, 15 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

tidying up edit

I'm a wp novice, but I care about this article, could a more experienced wikipedian point out some of the stylistic errors and links to fix/examples? Bennyp 2 July 2005 23:50 (UTC)

im also a newbie, but i want to edit this tonite as i see a few inaccuracies and also doubling with the "free tekno", i will try to contact the guy below for his input Mujinga 15:54, 6 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Multiple Issues... edit

Yup. Mostly that it's not in any way a unique, nor original, nor new thing. It's just another name for music that was first produced almost 25 years ago.

I really can't believe that I try to put up $h1t on Wikipissia about small but awesome record labels doing _new_ things, but those get killed. Meanwhile, this same old crap, just a "new name" stuff lingers.

"Those who do not know history, are doomed to repeat it." -- Winston Churchill, quoting someone else.

My vote, which is worthless? Kill this entirely. If I can't get a small label that's put out 250+ ambient drone CDs in the last 20 years on Wikipoopia, then no way this should have an entry. 208.151.246.192 (talk) 04:08, 22 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

organising tekno links edit

so i made a few changes here and want also to work on the teknival and free tekno pages. Mujinga 00:29, 7 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm not even sure if this needs its own page - the scene itself is covered under the free party and teknival pages quite adequately. And while the term "tekno" is used in the squat party scene here in the UK, it generally refers to the music, not the scene itself. The term "freetekno" seems to be more appropriate to more European versions of Wikipedia perhaps. spiralx 16:20, 9 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

i am inclined to agree with spiralx in wondering if this page is justified ... but then there is freetekno.wikicities.com/wiki/Main_Page already set up and as discussed elsewhere maybe freetekno is recognised term in canada ... Mujinga 04:26, 10 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have added an Illegalparty template and included free party, teknival and Freetekno. If you want to edit it then go to Template:Illegalparty, I have added an image to the template but I'm not sure if it should be there as it is the same as the image on Freetekno. I have also removed the cleanup tag as nobody seems to know why it is still here. It would be good if someone from Canada and parts of Europe where the term is used could and information of laws in those countries. Rex the first 14:16, 5 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think the name of the template should be changed. Not all freetekno parties are illegal. Northtek 2005 was held on crown land in Ontario. 23:13, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

the term teknival and free tekno has been used in the united states since the early 90's. the first teknivals on the entire north american continent (this includes you too canada) were thrown by Pirate Audio and SPAZ soundsystems in 96, though both crews were doing smaller free partys prior to this (spaz fre partys started in a squatted church in the uk in late 89/90 , pirate audio in 91/92 in the south), such as the galveston texas teknivals that continued for 3 years befor the local authoritys shut it down for good. autonomous mutant festival is the longest running teknival in america, this will be the 10th year, and this party lasts at least a week and wisconsin had bezerkus fest that garth from blackkat put together in the late 90's. and i am not going into spiral tribes stay in america, 97-98. so my point is, please dont hate, i am merely adding to this debate.the united states has had loads of systems and many teknivals and free partys, we just got our own style and sound/look/vibe etc because we started this thing befor there was a european template to follow, and thought we were doing our own thing til we hooked up with ntw23 and saw what they were doing, then we realised there was a whole world turned onto free vibe, i think thats why we had our euro brothers embrace us so well, they knew we were onto something original on our own right. i got lots to say, but this isnt the forum to do it, anyone want my opinions or versions of the history, contact me at djjackacid@yahoo.com. no disrespect to anyone contributing to this, because everyone working on this is REAL SOUL-JA, Jack Acid

Updates edit

I've updated and reorganized the article a little bit. Could you please review it, specifically the spirit (rename maybe?) section? I've also reorganized and updated the links, splitting north american into Canada and USA. Could we see some more information on history? I'd like to see subheadings under history: Origins, Police, Current Incarnations, etc.

As well, the freetekno wikicity is somewhat obsolete, we've bought our own server and are now hosting a tikiwiki at http://free23.net Come check us out :) Bennyp 01:52, 23 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

dont know why usa and canada are split apart, the states been doing it since early 90's and quite established, just as much as canada, and i see lots of us systems bringing it up there... rarely any canadian systems dropping down here past the midstates line.... we need to treat the north american scene exactly like it is, a north american scene.

i allo think the free tekno music article should remain seperate yet linked because the music itself deserves its own. Jack Acid

I'm not sure whether you've made your way up to Canada for any of the teknivals... but there is definitely a very big difference between what we are able to do and what the consequences are in Canada vs the US... and that influences strongly how awesome freeteknitians are willing to be. -thresh

Proposal for new page: Freetekno Soundsystem edit

As the main Freetekno page is getting a bit large, I propose we form a new page called Freetekno Soundsystem which would describe the composition and purpose of a freetek Soundsystem, and also contain the how to guide. Bennyp 23:21, 10 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Did you see Sound system (DJ)? im not sure if its quite the same but the two may overlap quite a bit ... Mujinga 17:03, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Freetekno stubs edit

keep track of Freeteknostubs here, when we get enough, we can propose our own stub type Bennyp 23:27, 10 May 2006 (UTC) Weskodyne Warriors, Freespace Collective, Harder, NorthtekReply

cool! im not sure what a stub type is but i think we are kinda busy with the same projects, you over there and me over here! im interested in creating a useful history of the tekno subculture but i am a bit worried about creating pages for current sound systems, it might invite unneeded attention, we already discussed it a bit at List of free party sound systems. Mujinga 17:10, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Templates edit

I created the Template:Freetekno_Soundsystems. Add your local systems today :) Does anyone have a public domain or CC speaker box icon we could use in our templates? Bennyp 03:17, 11 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Shame i didnt see this, a week later i created List of free party sound systems which if you dont mind me saying so seems to me a better place for a list than a template. But both are good!. We should discuss how to integrate the two things maybe.Mujinga 17:01, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

It has been suggested that Free tekno be merged into this article or section edit

Do not merge these articles, free tekno is its own genre. The freetekno article is a very vague intro to the whole culture and it should be dissolved. Free party soundsystem article could replace it, as not all Tekno producers live on a bus (the best do, or did!), nor do free party soundsystems all play free tekno, quite a few play trance and jungle and even some.... house music. A Techno article wouldnt have a "how to throw a club night" part either. A Techno article would probably talk briefly about its origins, the first producers, early labels and current top artists, while a "rave" article would probably be more about the birth of the culture, first promoters/djs/art trends/fashion trends/ laws/drugs/ and then the d.i.y. aspects of throwing a party, etc... So using the term TeChno and rave, can you see the difference between Free TeKno and free tekno partys???? Too many egoes involved with this, the free tekno article can actually help the genre grow, and put some of the ideas that were behind the creation of the genre to light. Please keep them seperated. - Jack

I dont like this merger idea because free tekno is about a musical style and i think freetekno is about a subculture. These distinctions could definitely be better drawn and there is a bit of overlap going on here, but i think a straight merger is not a good thing since i have free tekno categorised in the same way as breakcore, happy hardcore etc ie a musical genre. We could rename 'free tekno' to 'tekno' to avoid confusion ... I am interested to hear what thoughts anyone else other ppl think, especially bennyp, rex, spiralx, acid saturation and raerth since they are all already working on the tekno pages... Please post yr thoughts here! Mujinga 16:56, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Umm, not sure, I had never head the word free tekno before wikipedia so I might not be the best to judge. I think the Freetekno article needs some real clean up as it has no references and reads like a 'How to' and Wikipedia is not an Instruction manual. It would be much better if the differences between Freetekno, free party and teknavil were made clear. The history of Freetekno and laws (with references) given especially in Canada (where the term is used allot). Maybe Bennyp could help.
As for the merger I a broadly in favour, everything in Free tekno could easily be put in a Free tekno music section without messing anything up. I think it is bad to have Free tekno and Freetekno being different articles and should be Free tekno music and Free tekno party if not merged. ................................................... free tekno sound was created as a term to simply set itself apart from normal techno, or technically, club sounding techno. the whole "we removed the c because we are non commercial" is really marketing and something that sounds cool and militant to say,but really, no ones giving away free tekno 12"s, not to my knowledge. honestly, seb and i discussed this heavily on a teknival tour of america in 1996. the main difference and concept of free tekno was that it was music played at teknivals and free partys that was taken from liveset improv jams, and re-editted for cd/12" or whatever hardcopy. as well as sold and distributed from the artists through non traditional means, like the trunk of your car or back of the bus. breakbeats/jungle beats/4 to the floor beats, didnt really matter, a drum n bass track could be defined as free tekno, look at all the pranksta tunes on ntw23 for example. thank you, and if someone wants to reword this to add in the wiki, please do.

How to write about How To Host a Freetekno Party edit

This whole part should be rewritten for encyclopedic tone... more like:

Freetekno Parties edit

In planning a party (and well in advance of the event) the location is first chosen, and checked for hazards, accessibility, adequate space, etc., usually in a 'low profile' location. The location is kept secret during the planning phase, so as to prevent...

This section should to be rewritten: wikpedia is not a How to see the boldened parts of the first section -- the reference to the second person (you) really blows the encyclopedic tone. Also it reads like a party cookbook, its totally ok to include this information, but not in an instructional way.

=Howto write about how To Host a Freetekno Party edit

"Freeteknitians" share a Do It Yourself attitude. Let this section be a guide on how you can throw your own Freetekno party. There are several things that you will need if you are planning a freetekno party. Have these items arranged and confirmed (to the hour) well in advance, as it is a big stress to try and arrange them the day of the event.

Location
Scout out your location well in advance. If it's an urban party, check the place out first, maybe during the day time. Consider how easily and covertly you can get possibly hundreds of ravers inside the place. Check it out for dangerous drops, equipment, electrical and fire hazards. If you can deal with them, do so, otherwise use caution tape to secure them. If your location is in a forest or park, scout it out to make sure it's not all muddy.
Map Point
Arrange a map point for people to meet at on the way to the party. Consider accessibility, perhaps place your map point along a transit route. Provide a link to Mapquest or Google Maps. Don't release your location or map point until 24 hours before the event. This discourages pushers and police from showing up and ruining your fun.
Power Source
The most popular power sources are gas-fired generators, like the kind a person may buy for use at a cottage. Gas generators typically provide the most power, and are thus preferred by most soundsystems. They are not the only alternative, though, many soundsystems run off of discarded car batteries. The downside to this is the weight and bulk of your power source. There are even some soundsystems out there that are run by bicycle power
Speakers
Obviously if you want to make noise, you'll need speakers. Powered speakers are ideal as they don't require an amp, but old amps are easy to come by anyways. If you don't have speakers you can rent them from music stores in your area. Be on the lookout for discarded speakers, as well. They may still be salvageable.
DJ equipment
If you want DJs to play, you'll need at least two turntables, a mixer (use a durable one), headphones and all the necessary cables
Transportation
You'll need to haul all this stuff around, somehow. Arrange a ride well in advance. Be certain that your ride is available to haul the equipment to the party and back the next morning. Know your driver. Make sure the driver isn't intoxicated.
Decoration
Good decorations make the difference between a good party and a great party. Don't let this slip past you. Make your decorations weeks in advance.
