More to this than just individuals
editI don't know much about the history of the name Freeman but surely there's more information to learn about it than just the individuals who are named Freeman? My understanding is that it was a name created by freed slaves (in the U.S., could be in other places as well like parts of the Caribbean) to define themselves and dissociate from their former slave masters. Does anyone have numbers on how many former slaves did this? How many people created the name 'Freeman' during and after slavery? Was it more popular after slavery was abolished or before? Would love to know these things and it certainly feels like this article should be more than just a list.
