Is this particularly associated with renal artery stenosis? My unit has started getting MRAs of everyone with FPE. Any sens in this? JFW | T@lk 12:49, 8 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm thinking the link is fairly obvious (assuming your patients are all elderly); atherosclerosis causes both left heart failure (via coronary artery disease, which can lead to FPE) and renal artery stenosis.

The following paper ( de Silva R, Nikitin NP, Bhandari S, Nicholson A, Clark AL, Cleland JG. Atherosclerotic renovascular disease in chronic heart failure: should we intervene? Eur Heart J. 2005 Aug;26(16):1596-605. Epub 2005 May 26. PMID 15919719 ) states "[o]ne-third of patients with CHF are reported to have significant renovascular disease." Association -- yes. Should you do anything about discovered renovascular disease -- still unclear as above. I personally do order MRAs in elderly patients with LVH who have presented with flash pulmonary edema in the absence of ischemia -- Samir (the scope) धर्म 21:18, 9 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
