Should Flag of the Abkhaz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic merge here (Flag of Abkhazia)? Someone placed a merge tag without comment. Please comment with merge or don't merge.D O N D E groovily Talk to me 19:09, 27 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Does the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia have a flag edit

Does the ARA (Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia) have a flag (other then the Georgian flag)? This article says it doesn't, Government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia#Symbols of Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia says it does. Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 02:45, 21 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it has, check the source.--Balakhadze  ႫႨႼႤႰႠ 23:12, 24 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Coincidentally, both Georgian South Ossetia and separatist South Ossetia use the same flag. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 12:54, 13 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Lead edit

I mostly disagree with this edit. Not with the removal of the boding, just the wording changes. My version started out by stating that Abkhazia was a disputed territory (which the Abkhazia article also does), then clearly states who claims it, then stating who controls it. The current one isn't as clear, and "Georgia considers Abkhazia to be governed by the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia" sounds like their disputing who has actual control, rather then disputing the legitimacy of that control. Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 01:10, 23 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

The dispute is implicit in that we have two separate claims clearly presented. As for claim vs control, control is the more important factor. Anyone can claim something, and legitimacy is disputed, however control is a definable fact. I've reworded it to try and be clearer. CMD (talk) 01:30, 23 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Would you object to replacing "Georgia considers Abkhazia to be part of Georgia, legally governed by the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia." with "Georgia considers Abkhazia to be part of Georgia, as it's Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia.". Technically, the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia is Abkhazia, it's the government of the AROA that governs it. Also Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia is a redirect to Abkhazia. I don't understand what your sentence is trying to say, sorry. Is that "it's" meant to have an apostrophe? If not, would "Georgia considers Abkhazia to be an autonomous region of Georgia" convey what you want? CMD (talk) 03:53, 23 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Contradiction edit

AFAIK, the {{contradict-other}} tag added by Emmette Hernandez Coleman in March was added because the article used to say the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia used the Georgian flag, while the ARA government article shows a distinct flag for the ARA. Now that the "Flag of Abkhazia" article does show the "new" flag, can I assume the tag can be removed? SiBr4 ("CyberFour") (talk) 14:50, 19 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

If I remember correctly, and don't take my word for this because my memory is vague, the previously the AROA (Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia) didn't have flag of Abkhazia. The only flag of Abkhazia was the ROA's (Republic of Abkhazia) flag. However the AROA recently introduced an official flag of Abkhazia, but one of the articles was out of date, hence the contradiction.
Bottom line, I think the tag can be removed, but do you're own homework scene my my memory is vague. Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 22:53, 19 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Are the proposed flags of the AROA anything more than proposals? CMD (talk) 16:05, 20 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Since this article and the ARoA government article show the same flag, I've removed the contradiction tag. I replaced it with {{morerefs-section}} since I can't find any sources that prove that the flag of the ARoA is actually official (the heraldika.ge source calls it a "project flag", which seems to imply it's a proposal/draft that hasn't been officially adopted). Mountainous Republic of the Northern Caucasus edit

I'm deleting the following sentence because the first half doesn't seem to be accurate, and the second half is therefore moot because it no longer relates to the Abkhaz flag: "The seven green and white stripes are based on the Mountainous Republic of the Northern Caucasus, which Abkhazia considers itself to have been a part of after World War I."

As Wikipedia and other sources note, the Mountainous Republic of the Northern Caucasus had a tricolor flag of three horizontal black, green, and red stripes, and after it was absorbed into the USSR as the Mountainous Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, its new flag had no stripes at all (although it did have seven stars). If someone knows a predecessor flag that really did have seven green and white stripes, please feel free to add it with details. 153.31.112.24 (talk) 17:23, 27 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
