Primary topic
edit(Discussion moved from Talk:Ensemble averaging (machine learning)#Primary topic. fgnievinski (talk) 01:34, 30 November 2021 (UTC))
@Widefox: Can you justify why Ensemble averaging (machine learning) is not the primary topic, over Ensemble average (statistical mechanics)? Thanks. fgnievinski (talk) 15:30, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Fgnievinski: unclear question - primary topic for what term? It would help if this discussion was actually at that location, as this clearly isn't it. Widefox; talk 17:43, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
- Primary topic for ensemble average, of course. fgnievinski (talk) 17:46, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
- Suggest you move this discussion Talk:Ensemble average (disambiguation), and see WP:PRIMARYTOPIC which discusses arguments for proposing a change. In the absence of such arguments I have nothing to comment on yet. My inintial thoughts are the physics topic is what 100 years old, and the machine learning is two decades. In the mean time, I've put my superficial view that there's likely scope for a dabconcept at the primary topic - which I detailed on that talk. Widefox; talk 21:51, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
- WP:PRIMARYTOPIC says explicitly:
While long-term significance is a factor, historical age is not determinative. Being the original source of the name is also not determinative. (...) A topic may have principal relevance for a specific group of people..., but not be the primary meaning among a general audience.
- Ensemble average finds a much broader usage outside of physics, in applied statistics. fgnievinski (talk) 02:12, 30 November 2021 (UTC)
Deletion
editUser:Fgnievinski Please familiarise yourself with WP:TWODABS and primarytopic - this dab has a primary topic - see the title - your edit summary here [1] is factually incorrect. A couple of editors have recognised this and due to procedural issues this wasn't deleted yet. Now, as for this latest attempt...yes you deprodded, and I was just undoing my mistake of reinserting the PROD, when you did it for me. When you deprodded you also removed the pertinent issue - a valid tag of this dab needing additional entries (else it will get deleted). I've added some now and removed that tag. It seems to me that the articles are weak on the root/examples of this ambiguous term, so the dab currently is useful, with examples of that broad concept. Essentially they may be all examples of a WP:DABCONCEPT, so it's likely that the primary topic should in fact be that broad concept, but I'll leave as is for now as the articles are weak. If you Google the term, you'll see that a dabconcept is possible, and likely useful. Widefox; talk 18:31, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
- There is a tentative primary topic only because you've just defined it so. The very existence of a primary topic is disputed, the dab shouldn't be changed before that prior dispute is resolved. fgnievinski (talk) 01:26, 30 November 2021 (UTC)
- I agree a BCA is the best way forward, I've just tagged this DAB as such, while also indicating other related usage cases. fgnievinski (talk) 01:26, 30 November 2021 (UTC)
- Originally I had renamed Ensemble averaging to Ensemble averaging (machine learning) and Ensemble average to Ensemble average (statistical mechanics). Then you've undone the latter and but kept the former. For consistency, you should retarget the redirect Ensemble averaging to Ensemble average. But then I hope you'll notice the incoming links are not what you have in mind:
- Which motivates the DAB. I hope you can help clear the clutter instead of favoring your preferred usage. fgnievinski (talk) 01:47, 30 November 2021 (UTC)
