Talk:Energy poverty

Proposed Changes edit

After reading through the proposed edits on this talk page and doing my own research I want to add the following sections.

  • Definitions - summary of different academic definitions of energy poverty
  • Measurement - summary of different indicators, including the Energy Development Index and the Multi-Dimensional Energy Poverty Index
  • Intersectional Effects - include sub-sections on climate change and health
  • Regional Analysis - summary of how energy poverty is experienced in different regions

There also appears to be some contention about the neutrality and effectiveness of government interventions. I plan on re-writing these sections to be more neutral and provide a more nuanced understanding of what steps are being taken to alleviate energy poverty. There are so many direct quotes used in this article. Work on paraphrasing. Keyle.horton (talk) 21:17, 11 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Possible Edits edit

As conversations of climate change and sustainable development continue to progress, topics such as energy poverty will become increasingly relevant as we seek to make a more equitable and sustainable place. In general, the article is too broad and more specific information is needed to give a better picture of energy poverty across the world and how different people groups feel the effects of energy poverty. Although the “Intersectional effects” section has a gender and education section, the intersectional effects of energy poverty are more far-reaching than these two sectors. Thus, I hope to add more discussion of how energy poverty effects all aspects of life and its role in sustainable development. Cl115(talk) 10:44, 27 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

The conversation about impacts in the Global South under the Regional Analysis section should be expanded. There is information about the specific experiences in Africa, and it presents a broad generalization of Asia as energy secure. It does not address the fact that South Asia is experiencing energy poverty in the same context as Africa. This subsection should include information on both these geographies in particular. Also, the Africa subsection needs to be backed by appropriate citations. Keyle.horton (talk) 20:43, 10 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

This page needs improving edit

This article needs substantial improvement, which I aim to contribute to over the coming months. For example, more references to the literature on energy poverty, a clearer distinction between energy poverty and energy access, and better links to the multiple organizations working in this field. UPDATE: I intend to completely revise the content on this page, as follows:

  • Summary - as is
  • Definitions - summary of different academic definitions of energy poverty
  • Measurement - summary of different indicators, including the Energy Development Index and the Multi-Dimensional Energy Poverty Index
  • Prevalence - summary of observed rates of energy poverty
  • International action - summary of the steps being taken to address energy poverty by governments and development organizations
  • External links

If anyone has any comments on the above then I'd be interested in hearing them. Otherwise I intend to go ahead with these changes in the next few weeks. O-Jay (talk) 23:39, 15 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Comment edit

In the energy and education section it is mentioned a study with the goal being to find a relationship between energy consumption and economic development in developing countries. The results or any information that was found was not listed and may be beneficial for this section.

Additionally, the government intervention and difficulties section does not appear to be that neutral or cited from any source making it appear to be an opinion of what should be done, not what is proven to be the best method or stating a government/agency/organization's thoughts.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Rhale2018 (talkcontribs) 02:49, 30 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Adding a measurement and indicators section edit

I'd like to work on the proposed changes above and add a section on measurement, including the Energy Development Index and the Multidimensional Energy Poverty Index, and a few others. Please let me know if you have any thoughts on this, or if you can suggest any more indicators that should be included. Should I also add the Energy Ladder heading under this section? Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by KCCurr (talkcontribs) 09:05, 24 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

I agree that a section on measuring and indicators of energy poverty would be of substantive help. With COI I would suggest to recognise explicitly that any such indicators comes with politics -- politics of indicators, metrology and of data -- see e.g. [1] . Separate energy poverty and energy access? edit

I would be interested to hear the views of others as to whether these subjects should be separated? Providing energy access (and the discussions around that) is highly operational and practical, whereas energy poverty is a more conceptual subject. The two seem quite different in my mind. Evaluation edit

After reading and evaluating the Wiki article titled Energy Poverty, I found that the article did an overall good job at following the five pillars or standards set by Wikipedia. The article references facts, although there aren't many, and is neutral. The info comes from multiple sources regarding energy poverty. When checking these sources I found that they were in depth and relatively new. All of the links worked and did not seem to show any bias. Despite this, I feel that some of the facts and information on the page could be a bit more in depth and contain more evidence of energy poverty. Government intervention and difficulties edit

This section of the article is extremely poorly written. Subjects and verbs almost never agree, and some sentences are almost unintelligible. Also, there is one sentence that seems to advocate for particular governmental policies. It says governments should do something:

"In the developing countries, governments should make efforts on reducing energy poverty that have negative impacts on economic development and public health."

Proposed edits edit

Currently, the article is missing important information on regional analysis of energy poverty and lacks organization among subtopics. Although the article has a comprehensive section titled “Global North” and “Global South”, it lacks information on statistics regarding this issue in Latin America which I would like to add. Moreover, the section titled “Addressing Energy Poverty” could be joined to the section titled “International Efforts” since it mainly focuses on government and economic interventionism efforts. Feel free to head over to my user page and sanbox to find out more about my proposed changes and sources! I would be happy to hear any other thoughts or suggestions on how to improve this article. Update on Edits: I will be changing the title "Challenging to defining and measuring energy poverty" to "Reviews and Critiques of Measuring Energy poverty" and editing the content under this section a bit to add content and statistical proof behind the critiques of measuring energy poverty. If you have any questions about these changes check out my sandbox or feel free to respond with additional ideas. Jme312 (talk) 23:06, 12 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
The article impresses with its clear title that aptly covers the topic. The first sentence, in particular, stands out for its clarity and directness in defining the subject. Additionally, the existing work provides a concise summary and the sections present are well-organized, maintaining a logical flow throughout the article. You maintain a neutral tone while addressing the topic, even if it's not particularly controversial. I'd recommend a revision to the subtitle 'reviews and critiques of energy poverty' to eliminate the redundancy, opting for just "critique". The health section lede could be restructured to better encompass its subject matter. Most importantly, the updates made in the main body of the article need to be reflected in the lede. Despite the clarity of the existing content, several sections, such as 'energy price increases and poverty', 'education', 'development', and 'climate change' under 'intersectional issues', and 'Africa' under regional analysis, require further expansion given their significance. Lastly, you need to integrate more scholarly articles into the references, rather than just listing them under external links
The most important things to do would be to reflect article updates in the lede to maintain coherence and incorporate more scholarly articles into the references to bolster the credibility and depth of the content Squinn10 (talk) 02:36, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
The article is very well organized and includes 5 of the most relevant topics to the issue! I really appreciated the tone of the article, it was easy to understand, neutral, and informative. I also liked the regional analysis section; I think that is a good way to organize the information and present different approaches to the issues. That being said, it would be great to see some additions to the Africa section to reach the level/amount of information of the other two! It could also be helpful to add photos/graphs to the regional analysis section to break up the text. I would also suggest expanding the introductions to 'causes' and 'intersectional issues.' Both of those topics are super interconnected between their subtopics, and I think a slightly more comprehensive introduction to address that relation and introduce the topic would be helpful. I think the most important things you could do to improve the article would be to update the lead to accurately reflect the article, as well as provide slightly more comprehensive overviews/summaries for some of the sections. Overall, though, the article is super informative and well written! D0T1ro (talk) 05:48, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
