Edit to CCI Schools

Entries relating to schools under the CCI faculty was changed to reflect the merger between the School of Communications and Multimedia (SC+M) and the School of Contemporary Arts (SOCA) to form the School of Communications and Contemporary Arts (SCCA). This merger partly reflects the growing importance of digital means in creation of contemporary arts.

Alternate, more cynical explanations of the merger include:

  • extreme reductions in university funding Australia-wide, requiring smaller universities such as ECU to find greater economies including the merger of schools where feasible.
  • the original name of the School of Communications and Multimedia was often acronymised to 'SCAM' unwittingly. Given the doubtfulness of the full value of multimedia electives and studies in the school's early years, this was considered to be a very unwanted critique of the school by certain members of the CCI faculty and excuses were hunted for to change it at the earliest possible time! (I will not note my judgements here on how real this criticism was, due to conflict of interest - I am a 3rd-year graduate @ SCCA as I type this)

It is important to note in practical terms that the SOCA still technically exists as a separate entity on a daily basis, although it is now listed as a part of the SCCA rather than a separate school, due to the significant differences between it and the rest of the SCCA in several courses.

Campuses

Churchlands Campus

This campus is still operational and used for the delivery of University courses. There should be no justification for removal of this section to be removed at all until the campus has officially closed at the end of 2007. At this point, the information should be then be updated and moved into the previous campuses section of this article. Thewinchester 02:38, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

South West (Bunbury) Campus

"... other than the University of Western Australia's Albany Centre and Murdoch University's Rockingham Regional Campus". This addition is factually incorrect on the following grounds:

  • The Albany Centre is not a campus, it is a single building and does not contain the facilities expected what would be considered a campus including an on-site library, sporting facilities, etc
  • Rockingham is more metropolitan than regional, so to classify this location as being within the South West regional area is factually incorrect. The city is only 47km from the state capital Perth, Western Australia. Additionally, the City of Rockingham, being the local government district for which this campus resides within considers itself as being in the Metropolitan Area [1]. Further, the state's tourism commission does not consider Rockingham to be within the state's South West region [2]

In addition to the above, Albany (Great Southern) is not in the South West region, or anywhere near it, so even if it was a campus, the claim would still be incorrect. The South West is actually quite tightly defined - it starts with the Shire of Harvey (anything north is in the Peel Region) and extends to the Shire of Manjimup (including Walpole). Fact checks and such

Just noticed a few statements that are quite bold (although probably true) but have no cited source - there's three if I recall - could someone have a look into this? The claim to be the first institution of higher education in WA was one in particular - while 1902 was the first of what led to today's HEIs (UWA = 1911), there was most definitely HEIs in existence going back to the 1840s - mostly trade schools and mechanics' institutes and the like. Most of WA's regional railways were planned and built from 1889 until 1916. Also student numbers and comparison seems a bit odd - last I saw ECU's figures they were a bit over 20 as against 12 from Murdoch, 17 or so from UWA, 5 from NDU and 37 from Curtin (that was in 2005). It's worth pointing out that claiming to be the first, the most, part of a whole etc can be difficult to prove (esp with unis keeping the numbers close to their chests for obvious commercial reasons) and Wiki has clear guidelines on avoiding peacock terms and weasel words. Agree. I was a student at the old WACAE in Churchlands as a drop out from the harder courses at WAIT and I do think that a bit of over enthusiastic approach has marred the article. It almost claims to be in the Group of Eight by implication. It does expound the high ranking courses like Performing Arts, and I do think that altough the degrees in other areas are not as ranked as highly as UWA nor Curtin degrees by employers, it is still worth mentioning that they do LAW, some MEDICINE (Nursing), SCIENCE (Applied Science), and maybe BUSINESS, and of course the reason for it to exist at all PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHING. It would do well to compare the UWA and Curtin articles for citations.petedavo 09:56, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

Notable Alumni

On December 21, 2006 at 10:38 UTC, User:203.59.184.197 modified the notable alumni section of this entry and and added in Humphrey B. Bear as a notable graduate. First and foremost, Humphrey B. Bear could not graduate University as he is not a living person. Secondly, there is no verifiable evidence to support the claim (Violates WP:V). Due to the lack of prior contributions from the user in question and that it would be impossible for Humphrey B. Bear to graduate from a university, I therefore am satisfied that this edit was blatant vandalism in violation of WP:VAN. A warning has been placed on the talk page for the user in question, changes have been reverted, and existing watch on this page will be maintained for the foreseeable future. thewinchester 04:12, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Organisation

On 7 July 2010, 124.169.72.205 modified the Organisation section to include the School of destructoid robots and crop circles underneath the Faculty of Business and Law. There is no verifiable evidence to support the claim (Violates WP:V) and this reference has been removed. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use.   • I have updated some of the School names as they have changed and added links to their websites and Faculty websites.
  • The academic program information was not complete in terms of scope of course offerings, so I have added to and amended that.

I've added a heap more references to the pages, updated some of the figures and information since they were based on a 2007 annual report and the uni is now up to 2009 annual report.

Lead section

The last paragraph in the lead section is problematic with its use of superlatives: the "largest undergraduate nursing program in WA", "widest range of secondary teaching specialisations within WA", "largest provider". And perhaps this is what has inspired the content to be labelled as "reads like an advertisement". Superlatives are a function of time, e.g. the tallest building in the world, and how far the author has been prepared to explore. They are rarely durable and particularly hard to prove. I think this section needs rewriting to get rid of them (and perhaps to explain what is meant by a large undergraduate nursing program: is it that the student intake is large or that the range of study offerings is large?) It is a pity to see an informative article disfigured by these ugly banners concerning its inadequacies. MargaretRDonald (talk) 23:18, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
