The Fourth Letter

Is it really necessary to use the letter or glyph or whatever "þ" in the title of an article in the English Wikipedia? Is there not a way of translating or transliterating the name into something that someone without a background in ancient languages will be able to easily pronounce? • According to the þ article, and even earlier versions of this page, substituting "th" for "þ" shouldn't be much of a problem, and should make things much less obscure. Why change it? I can see adding " or Ecgtheow" to the first line of the article - and/or add pronunciation in parenthesis. Renaming the article itself is unnecessary as Ecgtheow already redirects here. (John User:Jwy talk) 14:26, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Fostering

Fostering was a medieval custom whereby northern European military caste families' children were sent to other upper class families to be raised. It helped strengthen political alliances, for one thing. For this article to presume Beowulf's fostering was the result of his father's death is simply the opinion of the editor who wrote it. It may have been due to his death, or not, but to say it likely was is unsupported by any facts, and other explanations are equally likely. --76.112.200.171 (talk) 04:02, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

pronunciation

The "e" in "þeow" should be represented in IPA by a long "e", since the name is a compound of "ecg" and "þéow". Also, I believe that the "þ" should be shown to be a voiceless on the grounds that word-initial fricatives in OE were voiceless ("þéow" very much being a word in itself), although that is more contestable than the first point I made.
