because its difficult to know exactly the length of any gene sicne hte defintion of a gene is somewhat fuzzy at the single base level; or indeed if all genes are in fact fully characterized...
that said, these caveats are probably not going to produce a longer gene. the dmd gene is generally considered 'the longest human gene' by a wide margin, (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_genome) and the statement is a bit too conservative and thus less informative than it could be in not stating this more unambiguously.
