General Information Regarding the Steering of Underground Boring Machinery edit

In the absence of the technical details, which are subject to rapid revision, all manufacturers are using metal detector types of devices to continuously monitor the depth and direction of the cutting head. The cutting head is larger, customarily by several inches, than the rigid sheath device which controls the depth and direction. When greater accuracy is needed, extensions to the sheath are made more frequently, as the boring progresses. The computerized interpretation of magnetic imaging of the location of the cutting head (through concrete, asphalt, and steel superstructures beneath roads and streets) is the area where greater sophistication and accuracy is sought.

If the operator wishes to go deeper, a cable or restraint on the bottom surface of the sheath "pulls back" and the unrestrained top bends down. All changes in direction are very modest and occur over numerous feet of forward drilling travel.

Ditch Witch of Ponca City, Oklahoma http://www.ditchwitch.com/trenchless/directional-drills is a significant manufacturer of this type of equipment. The photos of machinery in the article are the hue of orange that has been used by this company for at least thirty years--and the equipment shown is certainly typical of this company's manufacture. Much of the technology used in this process is not proprietary and further information can be obtained at the company website. 207.178.98.10 (talk) 18:44, 14 July 2008 (UTC) homebuildingReply

New challanges in the HDD edit

We have to update what happened in the last 2 years. 2008/ 2009 - In Saudi Arabia was successful installed a 24" and a 30" steel pipe line with a length of 10,000 feet (3,048 m). Both was installed independent in seperate drillings. The job site was near Al Jabayl. 2009/ 2010 - In Turkmenistan was successful installed a 56" steel pipe line with a length of 5,600 feet (1,705 m. The job site was near Karabekaul. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.222.102.190 (talk) 14:43, 26 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
