Talk:Diocese of Lincoln

Untitled edit

I did not assess this article for the Middle Ages project, as I'm not sure that an Anglican diocese is strictly speaking within the Middle Ages Project's scope. Ealdgyth | Talk 04:12, 29 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Proposed move Anglican Diocese of Lincoln -> Diocese of Lincoln edit

The result of the proposal was move. Andrewa 23:23, 8 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

For most of the Middle Ages the Diocese of Lincoln was the largest in England and, arguably, the largest in Europe. See above for the confusion caused! Hence:

  1. it should never have been moved/renamed to its present name - see 'What links here' to understand this;
  2. the smaller, younger RC diocese in the USA is adequately covered by the hatnote at the start.

  • Support as primary usage. The Diocese of Lincoln, Nebraska, should be so called. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 17:51, 31 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Support as the person who put the question above, if the idea is to cover the history of the diocese from its founding in 678 CE, then the title is inaccurate. It didn't become Anglican until the English Reformation. I could see Diocese of Lincoln (historical) for everything up to the Reformation, with Anglican and Roman Catholic for the split, or all in one article. Probably should make sure it is consistent across all the English dioceses that date from the Middle Ages. Ealdgyth | Talk 18:01, 31 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
    • Let's not go into the age of the Church of England; the Anglicans and the Romans will disagree. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 18:15, 31 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Assessment edit

It is a shame an Article rated as High importance should end up with one reference and a couple of Paragraphs of text. I may well put a note in the WikiProjects Talk Page asking for some kind of action to take place.

Map Wanted edit

If the medieval Diocese of Lincoln was the largest in the kingdom, and had chunks broken off to make new dioceses temp. Henry VIII, I think a map showing this would be a very good thing. J S Ayer (talk) 23:54, 21 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
