Map edit
A map should be made showing the counties of Deep East Texas. In my personal opinion, East Texas as a whole should be in a light color, while Deep East Texas should be in a darker color. Any suggestions? --Stallions2010 21:32, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Does this really warrant an article? There is already an article on East Texas. As far as I can see Deep East Texas is only defined by the Deep East Texas Council of Governments, and has no significance beyond that organization.Deatonjr 10:42, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
I disagree with Deatonjr's comment of 4 March. The Deep East Texas or "Big Thicket" area of the region has a distinct history of its own apart from the area generally referred to as East Texas. It was occupied and settled much earlier than the rest of East Texas and was much later in developing stable civic institutions and law enforcement because of its early history as a "no-man's-land" originally inhabited by criminals who fled into the area west of the Sabine River to escape from the law in the United States. It retains a distinct character of its own. It is defined by its unique history and not merely by "The East Texas Council of Governments." Ignorance of its history by a wider audience does not mean it is not worthy of an article separate from the general area of "East Texas."
Your opinion has been noted. However, after nine months, there have been no sources or other material added to support these claims. I am not aware of any histories or other materials that refer to "Deep East Texas" as an autonomous region apart from the Deep East Texas Council of Governments. I'm going to proceed with merging this article with East Texas Deatonjr (talk) 18:03, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
