Abertillery OS Map

edit

My mother spent most of her childhood in Abertillery, South Wales and gave me the name Darren because she found it in a book and liked it. However, there are some geographical features around Abertillery named as darren on the OS map. I therefore think it likely the name has a Welsh origin rather than Gaelic which to me means Irish/Scottish.

"Burnt land or hill" is pure invention. There is no possible word in Gaelic, either Scottish or Irish which can mean anything even remotely like that. That meaning must have been invented by someone with no knowledge of either language. Perhaps it is Welsh but it is certainly not Gaelic.

I would like also people to consider a link to an old Slavic, Russian name "Daren" that means "given / given as a gift". It's not a common name there at all now. Don't forget that many centuries ago all of our predecessors might have lived closer. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.103.208.134 (talk) 23:28, 22 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
