Identification of variants

edit

I am documenting here some observations learned in categorizing as a generic Curtiss CS, a Commons image not previously identified,

Strictly, this is OR, as I have not found definitive identification in reliable sources. Specifically, this 'new' one appears to be a Curtiss CS-1 or Martin SC-1, the serial not being evident. One of the existing two images,

, also appears to be a CS-1 or SC-1, as in the NASA description. To me, the most noticeable differences from CS-2/SC-2 are a cutout in the front of the cowling over the front engine cylinders, and the observation window is low on the fuselage. The other image, File:Curtiss CS with naval aviators 1924.jpg, appears to be a CS-2 or SC-2, with a fuller cowling and a high observation window.PeterWD (talk) 20:43, 16 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
