Cradle of Humankind

Could someone actually explain why its called the Cradle of Humankind? In what way is it considerd the beginnings of humanity? Did some important stage of evolution happen here? Is it universally agreed to be the 'cradle'? LastDodo (talk) 19:22, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

Done, though it can be expanded --NJR_ZA (talk) 05:32, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Wonder Cave

Can anyone explain why the Wonder Cave is included in this article? To my knowledge no human or fossil remains have been found in the cave, there are no excavations going on there and it is difficult to see how it fits into the "Cradle of Humankind" topic. 87.115.79.248 (talk) 05:49, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

  • Only some fossil babboons. It is not singled our by the UNESCO documentation and does not belong in the lead. Abductive (reasoning) 20:28, 29 May 2010 (UTC)
  • Quite correct, no hominid fossils were ever found in the Wonder caves. Nearest site that produced hominid fossils is Drimolen, 1.6km west of the caves. The Wonder caves are however geographically located within the area called the cradle of humankind. NJR_ZA (talk) 21:26, 29 May 2010 (UTC)
