Cover bands bad?

edit

cover bands are a cancer to the music scene

First, please Wikipedia:Sign your posts on talk pages. Thanks. Secondly, why do you think they are cancer? If your arguments are common knowledge or if you have a source we may add them to the article. Hyacinth 09:07, 15 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Also cited in Cover version as "An extreme example of punk cover versions", and now included (by me) in Cover band, Gabba (band) has been marked for deletion. You may want to vote at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gabba (band) -- 62.147.37.227 11:02, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

AFD closed, the result was Keep -- 62.147.112.7 10:45, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Are these cover bands/artists?

edit

Singers and groups like Johnny Rivers, Judy Collins, and The Fugees are best known for their hit covers of other artists/bands songs. Are they cover bands in any sense and should their be a mention in this article of bands and artists best known for their covers over any original music they ever did? --67.101.103.42 04:10, 19 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'd like to see this article discuss U.S. and international laws regarding covering another band's music. According to this document:

Extensive legislation related to use of a band’s or musician’s image exists today. By contrast, a band needs to receive no permission to record a cover version of another band’s song. The cover band does have to pay a licensing fee but the band that produced the original version of the song cannot keep the cover band from recording their music.

I found that interesting, as I assumed copyright law severely restricted the right to record or professionally perform another band's music. --JHP (talk) 21:02, 29 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

This is the point I was looking when I came to this article, thanks. I request that this information be included in the main article. How does a cover band figure out how much they owe in license fees? Is this a negotiated rate? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.170.227.219 (talk) 19:06, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
