are you kidding me?

this is a sorry excuse for an article. Somebody needs to dig up some more info about this city, it is a true stub. over 15 thousand residents and not a tad bit of information? c'mon people. fairlawn has under 9 thousand people and the article is triple the size of this one.

Creation of Fairlawn

The statement "In 1980, the Northeastern section of Copley voted to separate and form the Village of Fairlawn." is just plain wrong, even if it does come from the township history page. Fairlawn was created in 1958 and became a city in 1970. It is unknown when Fairlawn officially seceded from the township, but even if it was in 1980 the statement makes it sound like Fairlawn didn't exist before that. --Beirne (talk) 16:42, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Akron and Fairlawn are not in Copley

I had changed the wording saying that part of Akron and Fairlawn are in Copley to say that parts are in the former Copley. This got reverted. There is a good technical reason for my change. A village can be incorporated in Ohio but still be a part of the township it came from, or it can go through a legal procedure to be separate from it. Neither Akron or Fairlawn belong to Copley Township. Fairlawn incorporated and grew out of Copley and Akron annexed part of the township, but neither of them are "located in Copley Township" My rewording was a bit awkward and might need improvement, but the wording it was restored to is incorrect. --Beirne (talk) 04:08, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

This is very true. I have heard it referred to as "secession" from a township. A great source is the Census Bureau maps many of the county articles use. Cities that have separated from their respective township(s) have a solid black border where cities that are incorporated but not separated have a dashed border, the same as CDPs. A great example is the map of Stark County, Ohio looking at Plain Township. North Canton is still "part" of Plain Township (meaning it is counted as an "incorporated part" of the township's total population and thus has a dashed border on the map). Canton, on the other hand, is completely separated from Plain Township and is not counted as part of the township's incorporated population in any way. Original landowner (from Connecticut Western Reserve sales) is Gardener Greene and his wife Elizabeth, not “William Gardener;” unless the “William” is a part of this individuals name somehow, but I’ve found no record of this in the early histories.
