Fair use rationale for Image:New-Zealand-2006-10-cent-coin-front.jpg edit

Image:New-Zealand-2006-10-cent-coin-front.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Degradation of ten cent coin edit

It is my observation that the new ten cent coins degrade, that is, discolour and wear, extremely fast. I have one here that is so worn and discoloured as to compare to coins that I have seen as old as 1900. Is there any solid evidence of this? Is there a scientific reason? Will future mintings attempt to rectify this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.197.13.81 (talk) 06:49, 29 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think this is just the nature of copper coins. The copper tarnishes very easily with contact from people's wet acidic hands. Old one and two cents coins wouldn't have stayed shiny for long either. PseudoEdit (yak) (track) 05:09, 25 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Original designs for decimal coins edit

The images I've seen of the original, rejected, decimal coin designs had nothing to do with modern art or sculpture - the images were of rugby players and so forth. Where does the modern art idea come from? --Helenalex (talk) 07:52, 4 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

One shilling 10c pieces edit

Why were the 10c pieces minted with the additional 1 shilling writing; was it meant to help peeople confused by the transition? Also, did the 10c pieces likes this circulate alongside 1970+ 10c pieces until the new coins were introduced, ie if you went to the bank and got some 10c pieces, would some be the one shilling ones? Tarcus (talk) 01:09, 25 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

The 'shilling' 10c pieces were still in circulation until the introduction of the smaller coins, as were a few actual shillings. Presumably the banks would have included some of them, as they were the same size, weight etc as the normal 10c pieces and so would have been very difficult to sift out. --Helenalex (talk) 22:36, 25 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

We also used the three pence as five cent pieces in the 1970's, also 20 cents was commonly called a florin and the 10 cents was well known as a shilling even if it didn't have the writing. And just to make things more interesting shopping for weighted goods was worked out by pounds and ounces. Metric conversion probably took about 15 years before everyone's brains made the switch.Vaestanfors (talk) 11:43, 26 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Are you sure it was the threepence not the sixpence which you used as 5 c? Jimp 12:24, 22 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Foreign coins edit

I forgot to ask this last time; does anyone know what the Reserve Bank did with all the foreign coins taken out of circulation? I can't see them melting down other countries coins? Also, what was the most common foreign coin to get in change, and how often? In Australia you come across primarily old style 20c pieces once every so often (maybe 4-5 a year.) Tarcus (talk) 00:33, 26 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I don't know the answer to your first question. For the second, I tended to come across the Australian 20c and 5c most often, followed by the Australian 10c and Fijian 20c and 10c coins. I can't recall coming across anything else for several years. I had a pile of change I looked through before the old coins were taken out of circulation, and foreign coins made up only a very small fraction of this (probably closer to 1% than 5%). Old local coins would turn up too, such as florins and the old 10c "1 shilling" coin. I got the impression they had a half-life of about 5-10 years, although this seemed to vary by denomination. Of course this is all just my recollection. -- Avenue (talk) 01:33, 26 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
You will have to ask them. I would presume they would sell it to a company below the exchange rate and they would take it back to the country of origen and make up the difference. That is big bussiness and does happen. NZ coins are the most common in all denomination, then the U.S and Canadian 5, 10 and 25 cents, U.K 5, 10 pence and 1 pound, Euro 20, 50 cents, 1 and 2 euro. Some Fiji, PNG, Indonesian, Chinese, Singapore and Malaysian coinage. I would presume anywhere that is popular as a tourist destination. Enlil Ninlil (talk) 03:01, 26 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

legal tender edit

There are maximums, but they are maximums that make legal tender - NOT the maximum that settles a debt. I am able to settle a $20 debt with 10c pieces. That is totally legal. What is not legal is I forcing my creditor to accept those 10c pieces as settlement; they have to agree to them being settlement for the debt. (After all, I could give my creditor the equilivant USD or whatever else to settle the debt - which clearly isn't legal tender in New Zealand - but if the creditor agrees, the debit is settled.)

Over use of non-free images edit

At the end of March 2011, I raised an issue regarding the heavy use of non-free images on numismatics articles at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Numismatics#Usage_of_non-free_images. Three weeks later, there's been no response. My intention is to remove much of the non-free content of coins/notes from this article for violating WP:NFCC #3a, requirement for minimal use, and WP:NFCC #8, since many/all of the non-free images are designs not specifically referred to in the text by externally sourced commentary. If you have concerns about this issue, your are invited to discuss it at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Numismatics#Usage_of_non-free_images. Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 19:54, 21 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
