"Grancy gray beard"
editSounds like a misprint for "Granny gray beard".--Wetman (talk) 08:28, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
- According to Alan Weakley (author of Flora of the Southeastern United States):
- Chionanthus virginicus (Fringe Tree; Oleaceae) has various common names, but it has for a very long time been used as a yard ornamental in the South, and called "Grancy Grey Beard".
- But Grancy is just a shortening from "grandsire", an archaic word for "grandfather" -- and that, too, suggests how old the horticultural practice and the common name must be. Grandsire Greybeard. Cwilsonc (talk) 16:29, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
