I am a European. And I think this is pretty close to dictatorship. Some court saying that if you want to be part of the European Union, you HAVE to abolish the death penalty. Until very recently, I thought Europe was a lot more "free" than the US. But if Europe now IMPOSES "no death penalty", I don't want to be a European anymore. Because this is just a "law" made by a few people. There are LOTS of countries in Europe that have way over 50% of the population supporting the death penalty. This has NOTHING to do with democracy. I thought Britain didn't actually abolish the death penalty until 1997. Two abolishment year columns

The abolishment column of the table does not clearly distinguish abolition in peace time from total abolition. Optimally, there should be one column for each one of these years.

E.g., Sweden abolished the capital punishment in peace time 1921 (which is the year stated in the present table), but retained it for when "the country is in war or in danger of war" until 1 January, 1976. IMHO, both years should be listed. JoergenB (talk) 16:34, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

You're right. In fact, there needs to be yet another column, to separate between wartime and peacetime executions as well. I'll start it, and insert as much as I know. others will have to fill in--Wahlin (talk) 23:25, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

Where is Luxembourg?

Year of last use (wartime)

Information in the column "Year of last use (wartime)" is somewhat strange. For example, for Belarus there is 2010 in this column. Wartime in Belarus in 2010??? Maybe, it was for a crime committed during WWII? In any case, either additional explanations, or corrections are needed. Russia

Russia is listed as one of the countries that have abolished capital punishment, but it has a dash where it should list the year that capital punishment was abolished. Does that mean it has not been formally abolished? If so, it should not be on the list. Tad Lincoln (talk) 22:33, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

Country list and Czechoslovakia

Something is amiss in the list of countries. The entry for Czech republic lists years when it was part of Czechoslovakia, yet the entry for Slovak republic just says "Not since independence". If the years are indeed correct, they should either be used for both countries, or both entries should say "Not since independence". Keeping them different gives the false impression, that one of the countries is a successor to Czechoslovakia while the other isn't, which is not factual (please see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dissolution_of_Czechoslovakia#International_law).

I'm not an editor and don't feel comfortable choosing which option is best. Somebody with more wikipedia experience should probably pick one and fix this, though. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.173.225.138 (talk) 18:50, 30 June 2017 (UTC)
