Talk:Candidates in the 2024 United Kingdom general election

Page is way too big

edit

This needs to be split if it's going to have all of those tables in there. My computer can't handle it. Dylpickle2k (talk) 22:23, 20 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

The navbox at the bottom seems to be broken now - it looks like the number of references is blowing the computation limits. Perhaps a split by region? Blenge Hackett (talk) 05:54, 9 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Dylpickle2k and Blenge Hackett. This page has got incredibly long so I have solved this problem by moving some sections around:

This page should be functional now. Moondragon21 (talk) 22:03, 13 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Still issues - the last 200 references and the navbox aren't displaying, with the error "The time allocated for running scripts has expired." Blenge Hackett (talk) 04:11, 17 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sections from 2024 United Kingdom general election have been moved into this article. Candidates in the English regions are now at new pages.

    • I think this was a strange decision to make. Firstly, it's strange to have a page titled 'Candidates in the 2024 United Kingdom general election' which doesn't actually list the candidates, only including a lot of information that is not particularly relevant for anyone looking for a list of candidates (including people who are retiring i.e. not candidates), secondly the information was haphazardly copied over to the country-specific general election pages that it didn't bother to include any of the explanatory information (bold means incumbent standing for re-election, italics means standing down), and thirdly moving candidates to the England-specific general election article because this one has become too unwieldy is counterproductive, since 543/650 constituencies are in England, so you're just moving the problem to a different article without resolving it.

Surely the correct approach would be either to keep all the list of candidates in this article by itself, or at the very least without the list of incumbent MPs standing down (which definitely should be a separate article), or to have separate articles for '2024 United Kingdom general election in London', '2024 United Kingdom general election in North West England' etc. with all the candidates listed so that all of the national/regional breakdowns of the election contain similar comparable amounts of information. The way its currently been done seems like the worst of both worlds? MoreofaGlorifiedPond,Really... (talk) 15:48, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

General election 4 July

edit

Now the 2024 United Kingdom general election has been called the tables should now soon be filled up completely. As this page was too long and not functioning properly the tables have been moved to the following pages.

  • Realise my comment aboive is probably more appropriate here now.

Jamie Wallis

edit

Is Jamie Wallis standing again? In October 2023, he stated that he wasn't contesting a seat in Wales again but may look for one elsewhere in the country. However, both Guido Fawkes and Sky News have him listed on their run throughs of MPs standing down at the next election (both sources published and updated to 24 May 2024). Should we list him as standing down? It's unlikely he'll be a candidate elsewhere IMO. Thanks Jkaharper (talk) 21:40, 25 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

deselected labour mps

edit

should we include deselected labour mps (e.g. sam tarry) in the list of mps who are standing down? most don't seem likely to contest their seats as independents either SteveTempleton (talk) 06:46, 30 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Withdrawn candidates

edit

Do we include in the section for candidates withdrawing those who do so when their party endorses an independent candidate? The WPB has done this in Bethnal Green and Stepney and Chingford and Woodford Green and possibly elsewhere. References are in the Endorsements page Jontel (talk) 22:23, 5 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Party number discrepancies

edit

As well as the below, the numbers look wrong for several other parties. The figures look too low for the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland and for the SDLP. Bondegezou (talk) 21:47, 8 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

I have fixed all the numbers now, from a source that falls under the same license as Wikipedia. I think I manually checked the Northern Irish ones yesterday. Eastwood Park and strabane (talk) 18:32, 9 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Workers Party

edit

It seems that the number of candidates for the Workers Party of Britain may be lower than announced. In Paisley and Renfrewshire North, the party announced a candidate, but there is no Workers Party candidate in the actual vote. Eastwood Park and strabane (talk) 19:09, 8 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

This page shows 153 - basically the same as the 152 on here. https://workerspartybritain.org/elections-2024/
It doesn't include the candidate that was removed from the Paisley and Renfrewshire North seat. That number is likely accurate. Eastwood Park and strabane (talk) 19:26, 8 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Official Monster Raving Loony Party

edit

The Official Monster Raving Loony Party have their candidates listed here - https://www.loonyparty.com/ One candidate is listed for East Kilbride. The constituency is actually called East Kilbride and Strathaven. The named candidate is not actually on the ballot paper. Eastwood Park and strabane (talk) 19:44, 8 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Page that contains all the numbers

edit

There is a webpage here https://democracyclub.org.uk/blog/2024/06/08/2024-uk-general-election-candidate-summary/ that contains all the numbers for each party. I don't know if it's a good idea to just copy all the data from there though. Eastwood Park and strabane (talk) 20:06, 8 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
