A virtual pet edit

Hi Leschnei

I need your help.

If this

violates some wp rules, then please tell me: how can we keep or present the information in a wp conform way?

Ping welcome, Steue (talk) 15:51, 26 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Steue: disambiguation pages should lead readers to existing content. Neopets doesn't mention Bori, or other any other neopets, suggesting that the company is more wp:notable than the individual characters. In Pokemon, character names are mostly found in "List of" articles. Perhaps it would be best to wait for (or create) a "List of Neopets" article, and use that article to support adding the most important neopets to disambiguation pages. Thank you, Leschnei, for answering right after you returned to the wp.

(Petty note)

I hope you don't mind that I indented your above post.

Non-notable items

I've prepared something for you: user:Steue #Non-notable items in Disambiguation pages.

I think, this makes clear that some non-notable items are OK on a list. And I consider a disambiguation page to be a kind of list. So, I would consider that these rules about lists also apply to disambiguation pages.

External links

Practically every page about wikipedia rules contains at it's top this box stating:

(in excerpts:)

... that editors should attempt to follow ...,

... though it is best treated with common sense ...

and

... occasional exceptions may apply.

If a non-notable item on a disambiguation page is the only mention in a wikipedia, I would consider this to warrant an exception re. external links, even more so as this external page is in another wiki (although not a wikipedia), and seems to explain the topic quite correct.

The link to the article Neopets

This was intended as an explanation of my term "virtual pet". I would support, to change it to e.g. "a virtual pet (more about virtual pets can be found in Neopets)". This would make it clear, I think, that the article "Neopets" does not cover "Bori".

@Steue: I disagree with you statement above "If a non-notable item on a disambiguation page is the only mention in a wikipedia, I would consider this to warrant an exception re. external links". I would argue that an item that isn't mentioned anywhere except on a disambiguation page either needs to be added to an article or removed. And wikis (including Wikipedia) are never considered to be wp:reliable sources.
I'm not sure if you are familiar with the guidelines for disambiguation pages - they are different from articles. MOS:DABEXT states very clearly that external links should not be included; the same is true for references. References and, if needed, external links, should be found in the article discussing the relevant subject (Bori, in this case).
However, if Bori were discussed in an existing article or list article, it could be included as a WP:DABMENTION. This solution would be much less likely to be reverted. Leschnei (talk) 12:41, 28 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Leschnei, do you agree that it is OK to have

  • Bori, a virtual pet

on this DAB?

Ping welcome, Steue (talk) 13:13, 28 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

If Bori is mentioned in an existing article, then Bori could be added as a WP:DABMENTION, otherwise - no (in my opinion). Have you searched for other articles that might mention these virtual pets, just in case? And, you could also post a question at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Disambiguation, if you want other opinions.
