Edit war edit

I see that there's a dispute about the information that is to go into this article. I am not personally familiar with the sources, myself. However, to make admin jobs easier, it would be helpful if as soon as a dispute starts on an article, that the participants engage at the discussion page. That way we admins can take a quick glance at the talkpage, confirm what's going on, and warn or block the disruptive editors as necessary. But if no one's posting at talk, it becomes more difficult to sort through who's doing what. I realize that to the participants on a page, it may be "obvious" who's right and who's wrong, but sometimes these things are difficult to tell, for an administrator who's coming in without familiarity with the subject matter. So any quick summaries here at the talkpage, would be greatly appreciated. :) Thanks, --Elonka 23:02, 25 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Most of the problem stems from editors, almost always anonymous IPs, going into the articles and altering the various album certifications listed for the album as shown in the database of the RIAA. I don't know if you're familiar with the RIAA but the organization's job basically is to track the number of sales/shipments of albums, singles or various types of video materials associated with the music industry within the United States. For instance, if the RIAA certifies an album Gold, that means that shipments of at least 500,000 are known to be out there. They're not exactly the same as sales figures because it's extremely difficult to keep accurate track of precisely how many copies something might sell. An album could be certified Platinum for instance, which means 1,000,000 units, even if the album itself has sold maybe 8 or 900,000 copies. The CRIA is essentially Canada's version of the CRIA and does the same thing the RIAA does in the states, though Gold means sales of 50,000 and so on and so forth, but those certs are almost always left alone. Editors don't argue over various chart positions of songs or albums or the release date or titles of albums or singles. For as long as I've been sort of watching the article, which was after I noticed a lot of edit warring going on, it's almost always been about those RIAA certs.Odin's Beard (talk) 23:17, 25 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well I've "corrected" most of the sales/shipment data. I hope no one goes messing around with it anymore, since it was being changed constantly, with nothing to back up the claims. I've edited the sales section and linked the discography page and posted U.S. sales as being 20 million since it adds up when all certifications are added together, even though it says 12.5 million on the RIAA's top selling atists page. I've referenced online Talent for the 40 million worldwide sales claim, since they seem pretty legitimate, but this can be simple hearsay. Anyway, you guys can always just edit them or even lock the articles as you see fit.(Wreiad (talk) 05:39, 7 January 2009 (UTC))Reply
