Merge Request edit

I believe this page should be merged with Black screen of death. I'm not entirely sure how to go about it. If we can reach a way to properly merge (or not merge) this article, I will be able to do so, only I don't see an easy way this can be done at the moment. If there is a way we can do this, please say so, but if there is no helpful comment in 5 days, I will automatically merge it the best way I can. -PieMan360 22:48, 13 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Go for it. I would put the new (single) article under "black screen of death," so that it is not case-sensitive. It's kinda ridiculous that there are two articles on the same topic. -Fifth Rider 18:52, 19 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Vista edit

More and more I am hearing, receiving and start using myself the Black Screen Of Death as the Cancel Or Allow? Vista question (where the entire screen gets darker). Should this go in a "pop culture" section until it gets mainstream? Or simply mentioned in the list at the top? Also, the BSOD acronym is starting to replace the Blue Screen Of Death since the Blue screen is rarely seen now, I have no idea how this should be handled.YegLi 21:16, 8 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Help edit

I am a computer suffer and I was wondering, on my old win95 I Booted it up a while back ago and when it started up I did some random stuff and what came up on my screen was a bunch of odd white symbols and smiley face happy and sad. does anyone know of some source code that may look like this?

Sorry, Wikipedia is no Tech-Support, search goole for tech support forum, good luckYegLi 21:16, 8 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Another BSoD edit

My computer (at a time) showed a black screen and a message saying: "Cannot Display This Video Mode". Should that be added? --The Wiki Loner (Talk to me!!) 21:52, 14 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

IMHO the BlSOD can occur for numerous reason, I don't think we should list each possibility, the article already mentions drivers/hardware problems I believe that is enough.YegLi 21:16, 8 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Blacksod.png edit

Image:Blacksod.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Wii Black Screen of Death edit

I've gotten the Black Screen of Death with my Wii before. I learned what caused it. After doing some experimenting, I was pushing Home then pressing Wii Menu and Yes way too quickly and it couldn't keep up, so the screen went black. I couldn't turn it off or do anything, so I fixed it by pulling out the plug that makes it work and putting it back in. I don't like to do that, though... I'm afraid I'll hurt the system. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.234.206.1 (talk) 22:14, 17 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Whilst this may have caused you to see the black screen, I'm am sure it's not conclusive that it would work for everyone, I have just tried this on my own wii without any problems. I have, however received the screen when starting the console up with a GCN disc inside. A simple press of the reset button seems to be fine. IAFYM (talk) 17:23, 23 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I've gotten a black screen in the middle of a game. It had just one line of text: Halting: Error.

What does the Black Screen of Death do? edit

I don't think this article clarifies what it does. I got one and I think one of my friends did too. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.42.199.115 (talk) 17:56, 3 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

And then they made color monitors so along came the Blue Screen of Death. TheDogMaster (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 08:25, 23 January 2010 (UTC).Reply

Aspect ratio edit

Shouldn't the black screen of death have the 4:3 aspect ratio, which was standard prior to all of these widescreen aspect ratios? White rotten rabbit (talk) 09:31, 7 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

PSP BlSoD edit

Two of my games failed loading and stayed in a black screen. I can exit a game on such situation. If the game in a PSP could not load and shows up a black screen instead, is it really a BlSoD? --Sir Jazer 13 (talk) 11:01, 29 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wii edit

That last one must have been written by a 9 year old or something. Can someone fix it please? 124.189.101.143 (talk) 10:02, 30 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

I remember when I was going to play my old games in a sd card, my Wii gave me a Black screen of death saying "A error was occurd, take off all the disks and reset you Wii console" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 187.106.62.230 (talk) 18:45, 30 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

other causes for black screens during boot edit

If a system doesn't boot at all or if the graphics card doesn't work, the monitor will also display a black screen (modern monitors usually stay in standby mode when this happens, which usually means that the screeen is black an the monitor's power LED is orange instead of yellow, but the LED behavior depends on the monitor model). And of course a black screen can also be caused by a faulty monitor or monitor cable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.109.39.94 (talk) 18:34, 14 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Should console and PC specific BSOD screens to be catergorized? edit

I suggest catergorization of consoles and PC since the article appears to be inconsistent and is talking about multiple systems rather than concentrating on a specific one. KhameleonCona (talk) 12:29, 15 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I also suggest that some amendments to the console section are expanded and that people refrain from using nicknames as they are not verifiable (who said some people called it "Personified Fear", you need a source for that!) and people need to fix those bare URLS otherwise I will do it myself. Frightening sound? edit

"On a PlayStation if a corrupted disc is inserted, the Sony logo will be displayed for a longer period of time, then it fades to black playing a frightening sound without the PS logo loading."

Pardon me, but what exactly is a frightening sound? This whole sentence seems rather unsubstantiated. Does it really have any place in an encyclopedic article? 109.76.57.248 (talk) 17:24, 17 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Well, most people who have encountered the sound were jarred (for a lack of a better term) by the sound, though "frightening" is a bit of a stretch, considering it's a distorted version of the regular start-up sound.

Also, the BSoD being triggered by "corrupted disc" is, from a technical standpoint, wrong, As a PS1 will only get the screen and sound via an illegal instruction error (not 100% on how it's triggered, though scratched or certian PS2 discs will cause it). Plus, If certain PS1s have a modchip installed onto the system, the system will do either one or two things: 1)Lock up at the PS1 logo screen (this doesn't result in the aforementioned BSoD, but it will zoom in on the PS logo), or 2), the game being played will be abruptly terminated, an.d a black screen with a no-pass symbol will show up, with a message stating the console was modded, and to call technical support (This was done to prevent people from playing imports on an reigon-unlocked PS1)

There are several more PS1 errors I could list right now. However,at this point, they're not relevant for this, or any other article at the moment. -- 24.222.192.185 (talk) 22:15, 12 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

the Personified Fear is REAL edit

Unless you can provide some evidence besides forum posts, it's not real. Trivialist (talk) 04:06, 16 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Windows 8 BSOD edit

I believe there is a Windows 8 BSOD. Believe me, I searched on Google before posting, and images for it popped up. Please do not blame me if I searched fake images, but can you put a Windows 8 BSOD image in the article? 71.183.102.125 (talk) 12:47, 3 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Not unless you can prove it. Trivialist (talk) 16:02, 3 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
(Win 8.1 BlSoD?). For the last few days my workstation with Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit, with an NVidia GeForce graphics card and the latest NVidia GeForce driver, has been having the phenomenon where if I watch a YouTube video in full-screen mode, after a little while, the screen goes completely black, although I can still hear the video playing, and all keyboard/mouse input is ignored. I'm currently presuming this is a video/graphics card/driver Black Screen of Death rather than a Windows 8.1 Black Screen of Death. EricTN (talk) 04:27, 30 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

You modified the Black Screen of Death page!!! edit

Now I need to re-edit the above page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by William Pina (talkcontribs) 05:12, 10 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I did. The grammar was incorrect before. It is incorrect to say that an error message "is saying" anything. The text of the error message simply is.

Set Top Boxes edit

First of all, are we talking about Sky as in Sky in the UK (I'm assuming so as it mentions ITV but clarification should be shown)

Additionally, do sky boxes do this as all messages are on the blue screen in the information panel. If they did do this, it was a long time ago
