National winners
editI found and added the national winners for 1958, 1961, 1963-64, 1968-69, and 1972. It is a fun challenge, because there is tons and tons of local reporting out there for the winners of individual high school awards. There is also some reporting on state award winners (also in 1973 a male won the California prize, so obviously that required lots of reporting). And there is often reporting for the national award ceremony, but published a few days before the national winner is announced. I suspect we can track down more winners, though.--Milowent • hasspoken 22:00, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
- I have now found all the national winners and added them to the article with reliable source citations for each. I am fairly sure that no such complete list of winners has ever been compiled before and made public. At least not in recent history. When Daniel McVicar (later a soap star among other acting gigs) won in 1976, he said he realized an hour before winning that a male had never won, by looking at a "booklet" of past winners.[1] Apparently McVicar got called "Buddy Crocker" which he said was totally fine since he had won $5,000. In college he even had a t-shirt that said "Buddy Crocker" on it.[2] (2011 St Edwards University Magazine). I didn't feel like adding all this material about the one male winner to the article, since it kind of overshadows the greater cultural importance of the award over its history for young women, and it doesn't appear that McVicar has ever really talked about it during his prominent acting career (at least on a quick check).--Milowent • hasspoken 21:46, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
