New article edit

Is there anyone out there who knows of any published works that can be used to extend this article? Tony Holkham (talk) 00:00, 4 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

http://www.johnowensmith.co.uk/books/htw1873855311.htm The Hilltop Writers, was available from Haslemere Museum. It covers a wide area around HindheadSovalValtos (talk) 09:18, 15 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for that. I'll contact the author and see whether Beacon Hill is mentioned by name; if it is, I may buy it, though I fear one more book in this house may be the straw that breaks the camel's back... Tony Holkham (talk) 11:12, 15 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
I have so far failed to find my copy, possibly lent out. My recollection is that there should be several useful refs even just to Beacon Hill, let alone the other pages you edit. SovalValtos (talk) 14:05, 15 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Another local history volume I have been told about is by Audrey Mattock. Supposedly available in Beacon Hill Post Office. Title as yet unknown. SovalValtos (talk) 10:47, 21 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

I have met Audrey Mattock, and she has lent me her only copy of the book she wrote. The title is Beacon Hill , with the sub title Journey into 21st Century, and the logo Hindhead Playing Field 1932-1992, on the cover. No ISBN or publisher, just the details of the printer in Farnham, who still exist. I have scanned it with her permission.SovalValtos (talk) 12:59, 17 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Good detective work. Sorry if this puts a dampener on your efforts, but if the book is privately published it may not be useful in itself as a citation. Be great to see what you can tease out of it which may be citable from other sources, though. I am still intending to try to find some old photos from my mountain of "stuff"... Tony Holkham (talk) 13:24, 17 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
At this stage I will email you.SovalValtos (talk) 13:32, 17 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Farnham Library do not have microfiche of the Farnham Herald. Farnham Museum do, but only from the start (?1898?) to 1934. Woking local history centre should have later copies. To be investigated.SovalValtos (talk) 16:04, 9 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Pics edit

To editor SovalValtos: Great action pic of the cricket. I have masses of pics of the village taken in the 1950s/60s and a few from the 1980s so I must look them out and upload a few. The article is sadly lacking in pics. Cheers...Tony Holkham (talk) 12:25, 15 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

It is easy for me to take some pics if none suitable in Wikimedia. Golf club, Legion, churches, school; which do you want? SovalValtos (talk) 12:41, 15 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
That would be brilliant. I guess of most interest would be some of the older buildings such as Northwood Cottages on the Tilford Road, St Albans, the school, the old scout hut and Beacon Hill Road shops, but you decide - whatever strikes you as photogenic (I am no photographer, I'm afraid). Tony Holkham (talk) 12:55, 15 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Citations will be needed . Photos are not enough, as I understand it. Northwood cottages I have not heard of. Are they listed, and can you supply a map ref? SovalValtos (talk) 14:09, 15 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, forget Northwood Cottages (GU26 6RQ) - they are old, but not listed as far as I know, and of course not mentioned in the article! Tony Holkham (talk) 16:25, 15 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
I have taken 13 photos and have started uploading to Wikimedia. I am attaching the category "Hindhead" as there is no category "Beacon Hill, Surrey" yet. I am not confident of adding it, so it would be useful if someone else did, and then added the Category to the pics. I will not add any to the article as I think it best for another so to do. SovalValtos (talk) 15:31, 16 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Excellent photos, congratulations. I created a page "Beacon Hill, Surrey" on Commons, which at first showed all the BH pics, and then didn't. I must have got in a muddle, which I'll try to sort out tomorrow (today). Tony Holkham (talk) 00:21, 17 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
P.S. I've added some pics to the article, but graphic design not my strong point! So feel free to amend. Tony Holkham (talk) 00:40, 17 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
No rush, take our time and get it right. I have changed the size to a more visable standard for now. I wonder if the shopping pic with the village sign might go in the info box instead of the map? On the other hand there may be some uniformity convention. Just a warning, I think there may be problems with search etc for the page.SovalValtos (talk) 01:14, 17 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
To editor Tony Holkham: If amongst your 1950s pics you have anything suitable, I could take a 2014 one for a then and now. Is there any particular substantial 19thC house that is citable and deserves a pic? Cornerways at the junction of Wood Road and Tilford Road is under scaffolding. SovalValtos (talk) 10:17, 17 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
To editor SovalValtos: Regarding the infobox, I don't think there is any reason why you can't have a photo and keep the map as well. Most articles on places have both. Just insert |static_image_name= followed by the image and |static_image_caption= followed by the description you want. To ensure the infobox is not overlong compared with the lede, you could extend the lede to good effect by picking out two or three points from the History, Geography and Amenities sections and summarising them in the lede. - A P Monblat (talk) 12:12, 17 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
I've added the category "Beacon Hill, Surrey" to (I think all) relevant pics on Commons, and also added it as a sub-cat to "Hindhead" category. Phew. I will look out the 1950s pics, but don't nobody hold their breath... Tony Holkham (talk) 22:47, 17 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
A great effort, with especial thanks to User:Jameslwoodward for his instructions. I may try adding a category myself!

Linking edit

The linking problem arises if one types "Beacon Hill Surrey" into the Search box. It leads to Hindhead rather than to Beacon Hill (Hindhead, Surrey). Uniformity is needed both in Wikipedia and in Wikimedia Commons. SovalValtos (talk) 10:05, 17 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

There must be a way of finding all the wikilinks involved, semi-automatically. I have changed one manually on PGL Ltd and bracket bot is telling me I have done wrong! Help correct it please. SovalValtos (talk) 12:57, 17 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
If one types "Beacon Hill Surrey" into a WP:EN search box, one gets a "no results" page which lists Hindhead first and Beacon Hill (Hindhead, Surrey) second. If you type "Beacon Hill, Surrey (commas are important), you were redirected to Hindhead. I have changed the redirect to Beacon Hill (Hindhead, Surrey). Your PGL link looks OK to me.

To editor Jameslwoodward: I left a note on Commons. I should have gone in at the shallow end - would be grateful for assistance. The bottom line is we need to put a Commons link on this article to pick up any photos of Beacon Hill in Surrey. That's what I set out to do, anyway, but seem to have made a mess. England v Australia cricket edit

Can anyone find a citation for the game played circa 1950-53, in front of a vast crowd at the Marchants Hill ground? Ladies cricket SovalValtos (talk) 12:51, 17 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

The game was Miss Molly Hide's XI v Australia, 4th August 1951. Part of the Festival of Britain. There is a report on page 139 of an unknown journal (the cricketer?), which would be a source. SovalValtos (talk) 10:58, 21 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Do you have more details on the source? Cheers...Tony Holkham (talk) 20:54, 26 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hindhead CC have in their archives a framed collage of items relating to the game. 7 photos, The Women's Cricket Association souvenir score card for the game, and a page from a magazine, reporting the game, dated 7th September, 1951. They also have an engraved memorial plaque unveiled on the day. The article was by Phillippa Senst. The Cricketer back copies are behind a pay wall £20, but should be available via a library service. One would not need to see it to use as a reference if one could be certain the page on display was from The Cricketer, however there is a problem with the dates. I have seen that it was published fortnightly and have also seen a reference to an issue 1 Sept 1951 which makes a conflict. I have photographed the collage and the article, but cannot upload as I think it would be copyright. SovalValtos (talk) 08:38, 27 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
A firmer ref http://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Scorecards/154/154526.html SovalValtos (talk) 09:20, 27 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Brilliant. T... Tony Holkham (talk) 09:37, 27 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Done (with some other adjustments) - thanks. Tony Holkham (talk) 15:38, 27 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Suspect source edit

The website Top 100 golf courses has been used as a source. Whilst it states it is 'independent' it also says it is 'committed to playing, reviewing and promoting our greatest golf courses'. [1]. Anyway how does this type of ranking content add to the article? SovalValtos (talk) 11:55, 27 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

It's a minor issue. I found a ref that supports the latest ranking (updated by another editor but unreferenced) as the old ref did not support the new ranking. If you don't think the ref is appropriate, then change back to what it was before the two edits. Tony Holkham (Talk) 12:23, 27 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
I came into edit conflict dealing with the same 2014 ref problem. Agreed it is minor. I think the page would be better without the ranking sentence. SovalValtos (talk) 12:35, 27 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Your solution is simpler.   Done Tony Holkham (Talk) 12:45, 27 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
