editRemoved the See Also section, as the Bandler surname has absolutely no relation or connection to the "Brandler" or "Brandt" surnames beyond being Germanic in origin and/or surnames for Jewish families. Bandlero (talk) 00:40, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
History & Meaning
editThe surname Bandler originates from a Jewish family in Krakow, Poland; first documented via census around 1790 when Jews were first required to use European-style surnames. Most of the living members of this family are descendants of the immediately related Bandlers that immigrated to the USA or Canada from Poland around 1880; with some remaining Holocaust survivors and their descendants in Europe. This family has had several periods of splits and immigration since the late 1800s (notably from generations 3 to 5) resulting in dispersal across North America; disconnected, isolated small family groups; and multiple contemporary faiths. The majority of Bandlers are now found around New York, Maryland, California, and France.
This family have been researched and documented by multiple sources, such as by Dan Hirschberg at Jewish Krakow genealogical documents and Bandler/Bandmacher family and other Holocaust survivor records and sources.
The surname has a Polish translation (Bandmacher), but it has never been documented to have been used. It is believed the name was professional, intended to reflect band making, such as through textile or metalworking. Bandlero (talk) 01:12, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
