History

edit

I have moved this recent addition

At that time the Industrial Revolution was in full swing. Metal was regarded as a much more desirable raw material. Today the public opinion has changed. Environmental protection and conservation of resources are a concern shared by many. It is partly because of this reason that bamboo bikes have seen a surge in popularity in recent years.

for several reasons:

  • Is there any hope of providing a source for why metal was used for making early bicycles?
  • Can we find a source that confirms if and why bamboo bikes have "seen a surge in popularity in recent years" and are not merely a novelty item?

While we're at it, how about some recognition that bamboo bikes merely substitute bamboo for the cheapest, lowest-tech part of the bike — the steel tubing — and require all the same expensive high-tech parts as any "less environmentally friendly" bike.
Bamboo bikes are a symbol of everything boneheaded and ignorant with the Greens. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.127.152.206 (talk) 19:53, 4 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

History — "unsustainable"

edit

Calling the use of steel and aluminium "unsustainable" in bicycle construction beggars belief. It's about the most absurd thing I've read in Wikipedia. Aluminium and iron are the most common elements in the Earth's crust and both aluminium metal and steel are highly recyclable. Aluminium is produced from bauxite ore primarily with electricity generated by hydropower sources, so you can't get much "greener" than that. — Quicksilver (Hydrargyrum)T @ 19:30, 13 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
