Lead section - too much historical VFL detail! edit
Must we insist on the lead paragraph being a history lesson?? The article is Australian rules football in New South Wales.. not the History of Australian rules football in New South Wales or the History of the VFL clubs in New South Wales. A succinct summary of the status quo is sufficient. i.e. its significance (and a picture of where it stands among sports in the state) when was it introduced, what are the current professional clubs, what are the major matches, current participation and local clubs and significant home grown players. Editors seem to be more obsessed with the history of the VFL clubs than the current state of the code in the state.--Rulesfan (talk) 00:45, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
- Ahh. You want a shorter, more concise version of the lead. Precisely, you want current events, not a boring history lesson... Well, as a copyeditor, to that I say:

"No evidence of matches in 1865" ... edit
Edits were reverted citing that the code was not played in 1865 ... but since when is rugby played by twenty a side http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article13117671 ?? --Rulesfan (talk) 01:38, 1 May 2022 (UTC)
- Rugby at the time was often played 20 a-side. This is not to say Sydneysiders were playing rugby in 1865. We don't know for sure what brand or bands of football they were playing that year, because surviving reports do not reach that level of detail. Saying that the 1865 games "appear to have [been] played ... under Victorian Rules", as you have in this article, is pure original research. - HappyWaldo (talk) 01:48, 1 May 2022 (UTC)

- Fagan is a rugby historian who has published several books on the subject, and written for Australia's leading newspapers. And his post does in fact say that 20 a-side was the norm for rugby in Sydney in the 1860s. Re-read the post carefully. And then perhaps go on Google Books and see what other rugby historians have to say about the evolution of team sizes in the 19th century. - HappyWaldo (talk) 03:20, 1 May 2022 (UTC)

Why single out these Hall of Famers in the lead? edit
"Other Hall of Famers from New South Wales include Paul Kelly, Lenny Hayes and Shane Crawford."
Why are these players in the lead when there is a full list in the article, especially when NSW players only really appeared prominently in the VFL during the 80s. Isn't it sufficient to mention just the Legends in the lead? This article isn't meant to be about individuals, its about a whole state. What about Wayne Carey ... and others who represented the state on several occasions??? Lenny Hayes wasn't even a Brownlow medallist. Have the feeling the lead will become cumbersome in future years!
