The girls are syncronized swimmers, not "disco girls." They have bathing suits and swimming caps on. Reference here: http://www.director-file.com/gondry/daft.html

I'm pretty sure the "tall athletes" are supposed to be b-boys? Gelwood 07:39, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've clarified the references to clear up these issues. Just64helpin 17:18, 19 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
You are right. I have the book in front of me. "Bass: athletes with small heads and big legs, because they are hysical(sic), move constantly and have no time to think. Guitar: skeletons because it sounds itchy. Synthesizer: Disco girls, because it sounds feminine. Vocoder: Robots: it's obvious why. Drum machine: Mummies. Please don't ask why, but it's a very removed meaning association between M. Jackson (my hero) and what he did to himself." Gelwood 23:12, 25 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Description of the song in terms of functional harmony

edit

The current description in the article reads a bit awkwardly to me... "playing in two different keys at the same time" is a rather odd way to describe it:

The key is surely E minor, with the 4 bar repeated chord chord progression behind the song a fairly straightforward |: Am | C | Em | Em :| ... and the synth and vocoder phrases pick out the 9th (F#) quite determindley - it's just that the "funky" bass line frequently passes through F natural in that fairly common bluesly funk way, which is a flattened 9th - but that's just an added passing note, expanding the vocabulary of E minor somewhat - but this thing is COMMON, not bizarre.

Any views?--feline1 22:18, 10 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Mr. Roboto

edit

I added a bit about the video being somewhat inspired by the Styx song, Mr. Roboto. It was reverted by Just64helpin because of Original research, which upon reflection, I realize it is. So, I'm not going to put the tidbit back in. I would like to note however, the similarities are apparent when watching both videos, but a quick google search yields very few people also noticing this (those that do are blogs). If anyone else can find any decent source that makes this connection, we could put it back in or at least note that some people see similarities.

Both videos:

Fair use rationale for Image:Aroundtheworld DaftPunk.jpg

Image:Aroundtheworld DaftPunk.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Source of Around the World sample

edit

Jerry Goldsmith - The Rec Room was a song that Around the World sampled from, I think it would be worth noting this, as well as what filters/effects they put on it to make it sound like it did (which i would like to know as well).Goatonastik (talk) 12:15, 15 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's hard to say if Daft Punk used that song as a sample. Discovered and Palm Out Sounds aren't reliable as Discovered had no involvement with Daft Punk or Virgin Records and Thomas Bangalter has stated that half of the samples on POS are incorrect. Talk Box, not vocoded

edit

Hi there, I am pretty sure that this song's lyrics were recorded in a talk box, not a vocoder from what I've heard. Forgive me if I am wrong, but I just thought I should add this in case anyone else noticed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.111.215.191 (talk) 02:21, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

The source cited in that sentence says it is a vocoder. Please cite a source if you wish to make such changes. Just64helpin (talk) 15:33, 6 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Gotta agree that it sounds a lot more like a talkbox than a vocoder. 83.108.110.119 (talk) 15:04, 8 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'm pretty sure it's talkbox regardless of the actual source from Michel Gondry's DVD. This video (sorry for the lower quality but there used to be a better video of this) is Bangalter in the studio with DJ Mehdi producing the beat for 113's "Fout La Merde" with a talkbox I think. Bangalter decided to have fun and started to sing the famous chant that we all know from Around the World. I know this is all original research but I wish there was a legit source about this . You know looking at the video again, I have no idea if that's a vocoder or talkbox. ♫ Douglasr007 (talk) 19:53, 25 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

It's obviously a talk box, it sounds like one, and it doesn't sound like a vocoder. The source is wrong :) --feline1 (talk) 10:27, 8 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Looks like we have a quote from Daft Punk saying it's a talk box. [1] Cheers. jhsounds (talk) 23:25, 10 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Title wrighter?

edit

I'm a fan, I love it and remember watching the video all the time with my friends back in the days. Still I wonder: Around the World is the title right? Saying it in loop qualify as song wrighting? Did they had to be two to do so much? It's a bit ironical, I'll admit, ain't, since I almost laught out lough when I saw it, I had to ask if it's an error.
