None of the existing references even mention the term "Arewa", which is just a corruption of the Hausa word for "North", "Areoun", the "-wa" the typical "People of" ending. In Niger, it has a very specific meaning, which is a small state of the Dallol Maouri, and known for the indigenous "Maouri"/"Mawri" Hausa culture. (an online reference is here).

Is the meaning here a post independence Nigerian regionalist term? A general term for Nigerian Hausaland? Just a contraction of Arewacin Nijeriya (Northern Nigeria)? Anyway, this needs some proper references, and quickly. As it is, someone just copied bits from Hausa states, Sokoto Caliphate and the Northern Nigeria Protectorate, plus a list of all the states with Hausa population. This is looking like a synthesis to advance a northern nationalist perspective, and thus needs a full rewrite.T L Miles (talk) 18:48, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

The assumption on your first paragraph is wrong.

The second paragraph is correct. The article has no relationship with Niger Republic or any of its precolonial states. Rukshii (talk) 19:49, 12 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

The more I read, the more I feel this article needs a tear down. Arewa-Dandi is a Local Government Area in Kebbi State, and has been called simply "Arewa" in the past. An organisation which promotes northern self government, the Arewa Media Forum has been in the press recently, and is based in Kaduna. Fringes on both sides of regionalist agitation seem to talk about Northern Nigeria as "Arewa". Some kids online are flogging "The Arewa Republic" see here. Anyway, that would make this page a clear "Synthesis to make a point", which is a Wikipedia no-no. That such use is speculative as well is icing on the cake.

It looks like we should turn this into a disambiguation page, and just send links to some "Northern Nigeria regionalism" article, Arewa-Dandi, Arewa Media Forum, Arewa House, Arewa People's Congress, and Arewa (Niger) T L Miles (talk) 19:17, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I forgot Arewa Consultative Forum, an organisation that uses this term 1. Arewa seems to just be used as a speculative future region/entity/state that coincides with the pre 1967 Northern Region, Nigeria.

If this were nominated for Deletion, a process which I don't think is productive myself, it would easily be deleted under the WP:SYNTH guidelines. To avoid this, I propose this turn into the disambiguation page described above. If someone can write a well references non-POV article on Northern Nationalism/Regionalism using the term Arewa, more power to you, but Wikipedia is not a place for political speculation or essays. It's an encyclopedia that describes existing people and things with real world, authoritative, third party sources. T L Miles (talk) 19:28, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Here are some refs for the use of the term Arewa Republic: apparently as well known a concept as it is fictive. 1/2 / 3. There seem to be more in papers, and it's used on all sides for some kind of speculative northern Biafra. T L Miles (talk) 19:37, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

It will be good to also look at this, referencing to the alleged Arewa Republic movement [1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.200.1.35 (talk) 10:58, 5 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Page's name edit

I suggest that name of the page be edited to "Arewa Republic" to give room for the expansion of the article. Rukshii (talk) 19:46, 12 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
